MS ready-boost -- anyone know if this actually does anything useful?

ReadyBoost can speed up your computer by using storage space on most USB flash drives and flash memory cards. When you plug a ReadyBoost -compatible storage device into your computer, the AutoPlay dialog box offers you the option to speed up your computer using ReadyBoost

It can provide additional resources to your computer. Whether or not that will actually help performance depends on what your system is in need of to perform better.

I've never used it personally, and it isn't something I'd recommend trying to rely on in any way. If the system needs more resources of any type, I'd recommend simply upgrading it with those actual resources. In other words, I wouldn't buy a flash drive just to use ReadyBoost. If you have a flash drive laying around not being used, though, and want to give it a try, it might be worth trying it out with the spare flash drive.
