James Vernon, Army veteran, 75, saves 16 children from knife attack at public library

"A 75-year-old [Morton, Illinois] Army veteran is recovering from stab wounds after saving 16 terrified children from a knife-wielding teen who had reportedly planned a mass murder.
    [ ... ]
Mr. Brown slashed the knife at the Army vet, who blocked the blade with his left hand.

“I grabbed him and threw. … Somehow he wound up on a table” with the knife in his left hand pinned under his body, Mr. Vernon told the Times. “I hit him on the (right) collarbone with my closed hand” until Mr. Brown dropped that knife."

Pistol would've been faster and less paperwork to boot.

Provision for free medical attendance and nursing, for clothing, for food, for housing, for the education of children, and a hundred other matters, might with equal propriety be proposed as tending to relieve the employee of mental strain and worry. --- These matters obviously lie outside the orbit of congressional power. i'm sure if the gentleman had used a legal firearm to defend the situation some zealous DA would have charged the veteran w/reckless endangerment or some other BS charge...or held the case up until the gentleman got an attorney to fight to be cleared...sigh!!
just glad he is on the mend.

It seems like he was able to handle himself alright without a pistol at least. Too bad he was injured in the process, but glad that he kept up his skills. Don't see any major news outlets talking about how a citizen saved people from a mass stabbing though... Strange how when guns aren't involved people don't seem to care.

Would it have been legal for the gent to possess (carry) a gun while in a public library in Illinois? In some states the libraries are full blown government buildings according to the law, hence off limits to some if not all forms of carry.

uh, did you just fail to realize this incident occurred in Illinois ~ known for being a state with minimum accommodation(s) for anybody to acquire let alone carry a firearm and you are worried about being in library?

    never mind...
