Sheriff Mike Wade to declare candidacy against Dave Brat

Shame on Wade. And he always enforced the No Guns edict at Cantor's Roundup.

Henrico County Sheriff Mike Wade has emerged as the revenge candidate among Cantor loyalists
The Bull Elephant has today confirmed that numerous supporters of former Rep. Eric Cantor are touting the as-yet undeclared candidacy for Cantor’s old seat by current Henrico County Sheriff Mike Wade.

Wade, who just won re-election to his current office in November, is apparently the chosen vehicle of the “establishment” wing of the GOP to unseat conservative upstart Rep. Dave Brat, who won the GOP nomination last year in an historic upset of Cantor.

Looks like I wasted that vote last month.

Email shall be forthcoming. I feel represented in Congress for the first time in many years. The fight begins. If I wanted to go the other way I have many a Democrat to vote for.

    Politics at its best.

Imagine Sheriff Wade resigning his LEO post to run AND being soundly defeated. Now that would twist some people.

He is the hand picked choice of Cantor?

Um..........No thanks. I have zero respect for Henrico law enforcement leadership, same as the Commonwealth's Attorney's office. Too corrupt and anti-gun.

Got a Christmas card today from Bratt and his family - sounds like I need to send him a few pictures of Franklin in return.

Wade is lucky to have won his current position. He's no more threat to Brat than a fly.

    Anyone remember Shaun Kenney?

Kenney served as the Communications Director under then-Chairman Ed Gillespie in 2007.

Here is what Shaun is saying about Dave yesterday:
Let’s be honest here: Brat has pissed off or booted just about everyone who helped get him where he is. As a congressman, Brat has been a cataclysmic failure, passing no legislation of note while expending a great deal of energy burnishing his “national” street credentials — the very thing he claimed as the reason he ran against Cantor. Just about everyone knows that Brat ran against Cantor because he was snubbed for the nod in HOD-56 after then Del. Bill Janis left to run elsewhere, as Brat played ball in “crony politics” until it got tired of waiting his turn (Del. Peter Farrell eventually got the nod, being the favorite son from the largest locality). Folks are now learning about Brat’s role in drafting the disastrous and unconstitutional HB 3202 — which would have been the largest tax increase in Virginia history had Delegate Bob Marshall not successfully sued and stopped it cold. On Brat’s marquee issue — immigration — Brat has accomplished nothing more than op-eds.
Defeating Cantor left some hard feelings, apparently.

    Dave Brat needs our help

It seems the Cantor Loyalists have plotted their revenge. Of course, Sheriff Mikey denies it.

The 7th District SCC meets this Saturday, January 9th.

Rematch: Grassroots and Establishment Prepare for Battle in Virginia’s 7th DistrictRematch: Grassroots and Establishment Prepare for Battle in Virginia’s 7th District

Still stinging from their embarrassing defeat in 2014, supporters of former Rep. Eric Cantor rally to reclaim their former prominence.

Sheriff Wade, according to sources who have spoken to The Bull Elephant on the condition they remain anonymous, is being backed by a host of familiar longtime Cantor allies, including prominent consultants, lobbyists, and past and present GOP officials.

As mentioned above, the 7th District Republican Committee is holding a meeting this Saturday, January 9. The chief item of business will be for the committee to select the method by which the nominee for the 7th District Congressional seat will be chosen.

Rep. Brat has indicated his preference is to be nominated by a party-run convention, to be held concurrently with the convention the 7th District is already required to hold to elect its chairman, representatives to the State Central Committee, national convention delegates, and presidential elector.

Brat opponents/Cantor loyalists still make up at least a bare majority of the 7th District Committee, however (there have been no regular intraparty elections since the June 2014 primary). Consequently, many on the committee do not want to give Brat what he’s asked for. Instead, the plan for the “establishment” folks is to force a party-run canvass, which they believe will allow them to (a) appear to be compromising between a primary and a convention; and (b) still maximize the money advantage they believe their candidate will enjoy over Rep. Brat.

If you’re in the 7th District and want to come show your support for Rep. Brat (or, for that matter, Sheriff Wade), the District Committee meeting will be at the Henrico Government Center on Saturday, and will start at 4:30 PM.
This is from the Washington Times:

RINO wars: The Republican establishment strikes back
For Tea Party rebels, June 10, 2014, was the equivalent of destroying the Death Star. An unknown college professor named Dave Brat challenged the sitting Majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Since the position was created, no incumbent majority leader had ever been defeated in a primary, and Eric Cantor was considered invulnerable. Mr. Cantor’s war chest was counted in the millions, while challenger Brat’s campaign account was measured in thousands.

But Mr. Cantor had grown too secure in his job, too complacent and too out of touch with his district. And on that June day almost two years ago, the political world was shocked with Virginia’s 7th Congressional District voters removed Mr. Cantor.

Since Mr. Brat took office, he has done something that is simply shocking in modern political circles. He has kept his word. He has voted exactly as he promised he would.

    ...

Conservatives have wondered how the establishment would try to strike back against Mr. Brat. Now they no longer have to wonder. Henrico County Sheriff Mike Wade, fresh off of re-election to his cushy job, has announced he will challenge Mr. Brat in the primary.

    ...

Zach Werrell was Dave Brat’s campaign manager in the 2014 primary. He has written a fantastic book about the campaign called “How to bag a RINO: The Whiz Kids Who Brought Down House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.” Mr. Werrell isn’t shocked by the developments. A RINO is, of course, a Republican In Name Only.

Mr. Werrell says, “I cannot say I am shocked. In fact, this has been the worst kept secret in Virginia for months now. There is nothing more dangerous to the GOP (GOP Establishment) and RINOs everywhere than a congressman who runs on, then sticks to his conservative principles. Mike Wade, who has long been the ‘enforcer’ for the Cantor Machine and literally just won reelection as Sheriff two months ago, blatantly lied to the voters when he ran for reelection on a platform of seeing through his many initiatives. The only thing Wade could have against Dave is that he is a man of his word, and is too honest to remain in Congress. That, and his name isn’t ‘Eric Cantor‘.”

Many people in the 7th District believe Mr. Wade was put up to running by Eric Cantor. Mr. Wade has denied this.

Mr. Brat is taking his challenger seriously — much more seriously than Eric Cantor took his.

On Jan. 9th, the Republicans of the 7th Congressional District will meet to determine whether the nomination process for this year’s election will be a convention or a primary. Mr. Brat has requested a convention, which would be much friendlier to conservatives and prevent crossover voting from Democrats.

7th District GOP chooses convention for Congressional seat nomination!

Wonder of wonders -- the Cantor Axis of Evil loses:

7th District GOP chooses convention for Congressional seat nomination
In what would have been inconceivable at any time in recent memory, Virginia’s 7th District Republican Committee voted to nominate the district’s GOP candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives via a party run convention instead of a primary. The committee met in Goochland on Saturday, and scheduled the convention for May.

    The EMPIRE Strikes Back

    This is looking UGLY ...

Former Rep. Eric Cantor and top political advisor Ray Allen

Document reveals Cantor allies’ strategy to retake control of Virginia GOP
A strategy memo for the then nascent Virginia Conservative Network outlines plans to demonize and chase out conservatives from the GOP, while "forestalling as many primary challenges as possible."

These documents show how the Richmond-area GOP establishment around Eric Cantor prior to his defeat were not only oblivious to the coming Dave Brat tidal wave, but were convinced that their upcoming slating maneuvers in various parts of the state were going to secure them great victories in their efforts to reclaim power they had lost in 2012.
Why do you suppose Establishment RINO prefer primaries to conventions -- or no primaries at all? Exhibit A:

Exhibit A in the case against the Incumbent Protection Act
Sen. Emmett Hanger (D-Augusta) has dropped all pretense, and is now actively encouraging Democrats to vote in the 24th Senate District primary tomorrow.

For those wondering what the Incumbent Protection Act is, it is a law that allows incumbent members of the General Assembly to choose the method of their renomination. In almost all cases, this means the incumbent chooses a state-run open primary. Reasons vary for this, but generally it is understood that incumbents have a greater advantage in a primary because they are costlier and, in cases like Hanger’s, because they can be used to shield Republican incumbents from being held accountable to their own party because the law allows Democrats to participate in choosing the Republican Party’s nominees.
