Kate Folmar, a spokeswoman with gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety, says citizens arming themselves is the wrong response to a mass shooting.
“The need to arm yourself after a tragedy is a myth perpetuated by the gun lobby, whose interest is only in selling more guns,” states Folmar via email. “To truly keep our families and Americans safe, we need to close the loopholes that make it easy for dangerous people to get guns, and that means doing criminal background checks on all gun sales and closing the terror gap.”

“It’s going to instigate a real battle in the General Assembly this year, so my sense is that it’s likely to become an important argument in a lot of elections next year,” says political analyst Bob Holsworth. “Republicans see themselves as staunch defenders of the Second Amendment against government intrusion, and Democrats are going to make the argument in favor of restrictions, and each side thinks it’s going to work for them.”
