Rep. Mike Pitts H.4702 "South Carolina Responsible Journalism Registry Law"

    http://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess121_...bills/4702.htm

S.C. legislator proposes ‘South Carolina Responsible Journalism Registry,’ coupled with ‘requirements for persons before working as a journalist’

The Post and Courier [The Posted and Currying](Gavin Jackson & Schuyler Kropf) reports that Pitts is apparently trying to make a point about the restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms imposed by concealed carry permit law:

Pitts told The Post and Courier his bill is not a reaction to any news story featuring him and that he is “not a press hater.” Rather, it’s to stimulate discussion over how he sees Second Amendment rights being treated by the printed press and television news. He added that the bill is modeled directly after the “concealed weapons permitting law.”

There isn't another enumerated right in the federal constitution that either courts, legislatures, or public opinion would allow to be infringed, regulated, taxed, and abridged to one-tenth the degree the individual RKBA is.

Obviously, I don't support requiring government permits for journalists. I do very much like the idea of encouraging them to think about why the 1st amendment should be held sacrosanct if the 2nd amendment is going to be treated like the proverbial red-headed step-child.

Not such a far stretch really. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Liberals have been pushing for this very outcome for years.

Anyway, contact Rep. Pitts to voice your support for his bill, I have.

I understand what he is trying to convey ... it might bite him in the bum later though.

South Carolina Plans to License Responsible Journalists

I thought this is a GREAT idea. Amazing that some many liberals are upset. Love that NPR carried it.

SC Rep Mike Pitts is a true hero for taking 2A rules and substituting Journalist for Guns.

"My real issue is simply to start to debate about all of your constitutional rights. And that they are all equally important, and they are all separate," Pitts tells the newspaper. "This was an easy parallel."

It's about time we had some common sense regulations on the press.

UPDATE S.C. Rep.Mike Pitts says he trolled media with journalist registry bill H.4702

State Rep. Mike Pitts said the “South Carolina Responsible Journalism Registry Law” — introduced in the House on Tuesday and quickly picked up by national media outlets — was “an experiment to make a point about the media and how they only care about the constitution when it comes their portion of the 1st Amendment,” he wrote on Facebook Wednesday.
