After having posted the post on this topic, and my post being based on the news from q13, two or more other news sources decided to cover it: seattlepi and also komonews.
They have spelt the name of the man victim differently and given a somewhat different account of the attack on the man and his sister. According to komo, the man attacked the man first and then his sister . . . According to komonews, the man and his sister were both trying to defend themselves and each other. If true, this is a detail that may be missing from q13.
At today's visit at the martial arts studio, I asked again about defense against a man with a knife. (I asked about this several months ago.) The teacher says it is pretty hard to defend yourself against a man with a knife without expecting to get cut. At one point, he was in some workshop or seminar in which people played attackers against defenders and the attackers had a marker and defenders were in some pads that could be and would be marked by the marker. Attackers got a lot of marks on the pads, although some of the defenders were trained in martial arts.
It should be noted that during one of the simulated attacks, the attacker against the teacher had his arm and hard forward of the body. The teacher then kicked up with a straightforward kick and the "marker" went flying backwards out of the attacker's hand.
The teacher says that this cannot always be counted upon to work. The "attacker" in that situation made what the teacher regards as a mistake by how he was carrying the knife, although among those not trained, it could happen from time to time. He says that some knife-wielders will keep the knife much closer to the body where it is more difficult to kick away.
