" Depth of friendship does not depend on length of acquaintance".. Rabindranath Tarore

A true 'philomath" like yourself, will surely be missed. This board is now a less knowledgeable place.

May wealth and health be your friend.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore HTH. (ETA much later: Yeah yeah, I know, a typo, G and R are on the same keyboard so it's to be expected.)

Maybe Country Club Liberal Joe will better find his guru knowing/remembering how spell his name. And learn not to conflate philomath and polymath as they are not synonymous.

Country Club Liberal Joe may be a philomath but only a sophomore.

Tagore at Project Gutenberg
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/942

The etymological roots of sophomore pass through University of Cambridge (1209) which Tripos examination has maintained it at the forefront of mathematical sciences, with G. H. Hardy and J. E. Littlewood. It was to Hardy that the Indian mathematician S. Ramanujan appealed. Ramanujan is the subject of the book and movie The Man Who Knew Infinity, and founded and firmed the mathematics of partitioning. The wonders of his notebooks are only now being illuminated through computers.

But full circle; from a throwaway by CCJ through India and Cambridge.

Thank you for picking up on the spelling error.. Now surely you know the difference between, philomath, and polymath?

The OP, is a " philomath".. One who enjoys learning and studying.. Unlike you, his knowledge will be missed here on OCDO.. My .02

CCJ

The general consensus as I read it indicates your personal attacks of others who disagree with you are not appreciated.

The forum's rules reaffirm it: "(6) NO PERSONAL ATTACKS: While you may disagree strongly with another poster based upon their opinion, we will NOT tolerate any personal attacks or general bashing of groups of people based upon race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender-identity or choice of occupation (e.g., being a law enforcement officer, in the military, etc). NOTE THAT THIS RULE APPLIES TO PMs AS WELL AS FORUM POSTS!!!"

If you disagree with what someone posts, form your argument on that basis. Resorting to name-calling, however, is not appropriate.

Not surprising

Sad that OCDO has increasingly become a place where civil disagreements are unwelcome, and where individuals are dis-invited rather than leaving it up to individual members whether or not to engage with the poster. Not surprising, but sad.

This used to be a place where one was free to display knowledge or ignorance and be praised or called on it publicly, with true debate.

Still possible in most cases, when done w/o personal insult. Talk about the subject material, not the person/poster.
