The Norman case has been a long time coming. In 2010 I had this crazy idea of pushing an Open Carry Rights case to the Supreme Court while we were still waiting for McDonald v. Chicago to be decided. Many people here, and elsewhere, encouraged me to do what I could and Florida Carry was born not long after Otis won his landmark case. After McDonald, a number of fine people helped to form Florida Carry, they have all left their mark on our organization and I am proud to have been able to serve alongside them.
Along they way we've built a fine legacy of legal and legislative wins, we've also taken some losses. We're not done with any of this by a mile... Last year we were honored to be named the Grass Roots Organization of the Year at the Gun Rights Policy Conference for all of our successes to date.
We've made great strides in making concealed carry licenses more affordable and accessible, making Self Defense a right in the eyes of the law, and standing up for gun owning people who did no wrong but were prosecuted. We've passed legislation that has swept away thousands of illegal local gun control laws and regulations. However, restoring the Right to Carry in Florida has remained elusive. Even our "Shall Issue" license to carry handguns concealed here remains as only a taxed privilege.
In 2011 I wrote a layman's brief, an outline for a civil challenge to Open Carry bans. Then, Dale was arrested and his attorney contacted us for help. We've been in this case since its start in a small County Courtroom. Our attorneys took my rough legal ramblings and, last Monday, it culminated in a Petition for Cert. to the United States Supreme Court written by The Stephen Halbrook.
For years I've heard Open Carry Advocates like those here beg for an Open Carry legal challenge. Now you have it. And it's friggin' expensive! Please Join Florida Carry, and once you're a member donate more, so we can continue to fight for your Right to Bear Arms... These types of cases don't pay for themselves.
