"Police say the girl was running on a trail in the park sometime between 4 p.m. and 4:25 p.m. when the suspect grabbed her from behind and pulled her to the ground. She managed to get away by striking the man. The suspect then ran off along Laurel Road towards Dupuy Road"

She would have been better prepared to defend herself had she been armed with a hand gun, but that is fraught with problems.

Had she been carrying a knife legally, she could have both taken the fight out of him and prepared him for a zipper insertion.

Every self defense situation and option is "fraught with problems." A knife is no more a good answer than anything else in that light. Less, actually, as using one requires more skill than using a gun... and at closer range.

Either people should be armed, somehow, and ABLE to defend themselves, or they need to be accompanied by someone who is. Or they take their chances on being attacked and harmed.

The idea that, unarmed and unprepared, everyone somehow has - or should have - a guarantee of safety in any and all situations... that's just nuts. And that, of course, is one of the idiocies the gun grabbers use constantly.

Glad the young lady got away. Hope she considers going with a group of others in the future. She might not be so lucky next time.

We should be training are children to be warriors instead of self absorbed wimps.

But the whole goal of the liberal progressive agenda is to produce citizens that are complaint instead.

If one teaches it is proper to protect ones self from individual attackers they might think it is ok to resist unwanted government attacks.

Her attacker was pretty brash to attempt this in broad daylight. All things considered, she successfully fought him off, which is the primary goal of any self-defense situation. Based on the description given, she also made a good witness. This young lady was paying attention. Hopefully, she'll have the same success dealing with the emotional trauma.

At age 14, her "weapons" options are very limited. That she was grabbed from behind eliminates the opportunity for defense at a distance. The article doesn't say if she was wearing headphones, which might have impaired her awareness of her surroundings.

While we might not have a guarantee of safety in all situations, we certainly have a right to a reasonable expectation of it. However, our individual safety rests with each of us which requires us to be prepared.
