My OC is intermittent - that is, I usually carry concealed while wearing my business attire (suit & tie, etc.) and conducting business. After work and on weekends, it depends on the surroundings I intend to be in -- as I want to enjoy myself without 'setting off' people.

I do OC occasionally (more so lately) in the Las Vegas area and so far have encountered zero problems with it.Neither law enforcement nor other citizens have said anything negative although while pumping gas one day, the customer next to remarked that I had a nice looking Kimber.

So far, that's been the extent of it.

I'm new to the forum. I come from a non-OC state - Texas, but I'm used to CC & do so almost all the time. We just moved to AZ but we live right on the border with NV & make frequent trips to Las Vegas for shopping etc. I've been doing my research so as not to get sideways of anybody or violate a law out of ignorance. I'm a little concerned about the restrictions in and around Clark county and Bolder City.I got the info on these restrictions from packing.com. We pass thru Bolder City on our way to Vegas. So my question is - do the county-specific restrictions apply only to CC when passing thru Bolder City & Clark County? As long as I carry open am I OK inNevada? Arizona is great and I've had only good experiences with OC here and I've met a lot of good folks who promote and practice OC in AZ.

This is a great website and forum. Thank you for any additional info you can provide.

Thanks for the info, Blues. I don't find any restrictions about carrying open or concealed in the casinos either. That strikes me as a little strange. Since Nevada doesn't recognize AZ CC permit we don't have any choice but to carry open in Nevada. Maybe I need to get Korbin's book on Gun Laws of Nevada. I'd hate to have my Colt 1911 confiscated while visiting over there.

Open carry is not allowed in "North Las Vegas" (a separate city) and in Boulder City in as much as the state pre-emption provided 'grandfathering' to those cities' firearms ordinances. However, according to the Attorney General's website, Open Carry is in fact legal andallowed in the state ofNevada. If you are staying in Las Vegas 24 hours or longer, ClarkCounty requires you to obtain a 'blue card' (registration). This is not a hassle and can be obtained in just a few minutesfrom a cheerful clerk at any of the Metro Police stations.

If you open carry in a casino (private property) you will likely be asked to leave by Casino Security. No problemswith CCW permitedConcealed Carry in a casino - just don't flash it. Since you frequent Las Vegas, and since it is a 'Shall-Issue' state, you might just want to obtain a Non-Resident Nevada CCW permit. I will be glad to help you do that since I'm one of the approved instructors. E-mail me at EagleFiveZero@gmail.com

can you provide a statute cite to this grandfathering - we thought that all localites were preempted, but that the localities were just refusing to follow the law.

I'm having a problem getting the packing.org Nevada page to load right now, so I scanned a copy of a letter from LVMPD that was on that page and included it here. According to the letter, you are NOT required to register your guns under the 24 hour rule if you are just visiting Las Vegas for a short time.

I just came back from a week there and didn't register any of my guns with LVMPD. I did carry a copy of this letter with me, though.

Here is a link to the letter... http://www.gmj.com/pdf/GunRegistration.pdf

Okay now, we're all reading English, right??

The letter does not address visitors who are staying inside Clark County longer than 24 hours. The letter is talking about students at Front Sight (in the next County over) who are basically just "passing through" on their way over there.

The 24 hour rule applies otherwise it seems to me. But even if discovered by local police, you'll find most cops here to be carry friendly to law-abiding citizens and so far I've had no OC problems.

I emailed the LV sheriff's department the other day and here is the reply I received. I asked for clarification for the open carry laws in Vegas and Clark County. The website he gives is not very informative and I haven't called the phone number yet. Here's what he wrote back:

Hello,

In reference to your inquiry, please contact our Firearms Detail at
(702) 229-4029 or on our website at:

LVMPD Office of the Sheriff

From packing.org - here is the part I still find confusing or ambiguous:

__________________________________________________
Car/Gun law summary

Date updated: Aug 26, 2005 @ 6:34 pm

Nevada State Law is silent on motor vehicle carriage of firearms. Any law-abiding citizen may carry a handgun, loaded or unloaded, in their vehicle.

Some cities like North Las Vegas and Boulder City have "Deadly Weapon" laws, and you may be cited or arrested if you pass through their jurisdictions with a gun in the vehicle.

Boulder City

7-1-3: Discharging Firearms, Air Guns:
No person except a sheriff, constable or police officer shall fire or discharge any firearms or air guns of any description within one thousand (1,000) yards of any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway or other public place or have any firearms or air gun in his possession within one thousand (1,000) yards of any building, street, sidewalk, alley, highway or public place unless it is unloaded and knocked down or enclosed within a carrying case; provided, that this Section shall not prevent the maintenance and use of duly supervised rifle or pistol ranges or shooting galleries authorized by the City Council. This Section shall not prohibit the stocking of firearms by duly authorized dealers in the same.
North Las Vegas

9.32.080 Deadly weapon prohibited in vehicle--Exceptions.
It is unlawful for any person to have in his possession in any automobile, truck, motorcycle, or any other type of vehicle any dangerous or deadly weapon, but this restriction shall not be deemed to prohibit the carrying of ordinary tools or equipment carried in good faith for uses of honest work, trade or business, or for the purpose of legitimate sport or recreation.
Federal Law on the Transportation of Firearms. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 926A

12.04.200 Registration of firearms capable of being concealed. It is unlawful for any person to own or have in his possession, within the unincorporated area of Clark County, a gun, pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed, unless the same has first been registered with the sheriff or with a police department of any of the incorporated cities of Clark County.

___________________________________________________________________

My questions:

What does "capable of being concealed mean?" Anything could be considered "capable ..."

Can you carry a gun in your vehicle thru Bolder City or North Las Vegas concealed or open?It says: "...you may be cited or arrested if you pass through their jurisdictions with a gun in the vehicle."

You have to pass thru Bolder City to get to Henderson or Vegas.

I was in a local (Arizona) gun shop yesterday and asked the owners about carrying openin Nevada. They said in Clark County, which borders the Arizona State line - don't do it! They said don't carry in Las Vegas or Bolder City. They also said if you arejust passing thru this area - what they don't know won't hurt them. Keep your pistol hidden - keep going - and hope you don't have occasion to have to use it to save you life.

The gun shop guy who gave advice to our friend ArizonaTexas was wrong.

First - Nevada is an Open Carry state. The gun shop self-appointed 'expert' was incorrect, but seemed to be "advising against it" because of the expected 911-man with a gun calls, etc.

Second - Law enforcement in Nevada is okay with RKBA as a 'general rule of thumb'. There are always in every jurisdiction exceptions but generally speaking, you'll find Nevada LEOs to be okay so long as you are one of the good guys, etc. If you carry a sidearm in Clark County, they will just want to see your 'blue card' which is nothing more than proof that you've stopped by one of the Metro substations and registered your pistol. Long guns are exempt from the requirement.

There are places you will want to carry concealed with your Non-Resident CCW, i.e. casinos, etc. as those are private property and that way you can enjoy yourself with out being asked to leave.

Bottom line: use common sense.

Just out of curiousity, I thought that Nevada didn't accept any other state's permits. Isn't a Nevada CCW required to carry concealed in Nevada, or did I misread and you are referring to a non-resident Nevada license?

Thanks for clarification! ;)

Thanks a lot Eagle. I appreciate your insight. It just goes to show that maybe I'm not the only one that's confused by the seemingly vague and confusing wording.

To be safe I think I'll go ahead and get the Nevada non-resident CCW. Just to be sure I understand, though, if I do decide to carry open in Clark County - I need to stop by a police station and get a blue card - right? Should I do this in say Laughlin before going on up to Bolder City and Henderson?

Again - Eagle - thanks for your help.
