OC'ed for the first time today. not even a second look from anyone. could have been they didn't notice, because i didn't wear clothes that made it stand out, but i made sure it was totally visible. went and rented a movie, and went to my work, to pick someome up, the other person who noticed was a guy i work with everyday, who was sitting next me while i was standing waiting for my dad to get off work. i hope this will be the norm. good luck to everyone else,

Yeah,

That was my first surprise with open carry. Everybody was so busy with their own business, that they don't notice a handgun being carried responsibly by a law abiding citizen. Hmmmm. Seems like the way it should be. Seems like the norm, and that if people freak out, they need to have a better understanding of laws and firearms.

I do see you are from Las Vegas. WhileI don't agree with the idea, legally you should make sure you register your firearm if you are open carrying. http://www.lvmpd.com/permits/firearms_registration.html

Nevada is a traditional Open Carry state. As for concealed carry it is a 'Shall-Issue' state. That's the good news.

There are a few thousand people a month moving into Nevada. Many come from the "Peoples Democratic Socialist Republic of Kalifornistan" where the open carry of firearms is nearly non-existent.

My own carry experience is mostly concealed but on occasion I open carry. When I do my experience so far has been that some people notice -- and because it is unusual in the city I live in, some get nervous that there's a "man with a gun". However, I dress nicely and act like a gentleman. In fact, when I open carry I go out of my way to be a Model Citizen and behave as thought Open Carry is normal. So far I have never had a negative comment made or anybody dialing 911 in panic.

My advice: realize that if there is ever to be MORE Open Carry, all of us must act like Goodwill Ambassadors.

Very Respectfully

Point well taken EagleFiveZero.
I have been wanting to get into open-carry as I am not yet old enough to get a CCW, but having lived in the PRC for the first 18years of my life it is still kinda hard to get over that "guns are illegal" factor I have had to deal with almost all my life. It also doesn't help as where I live (Summerlin), I have yet to see anyone else open-carrying since I moved here in June. Even though I KNOW its legal, It is not something I am used to being even remotely tolerable by the general public. It is not just being harrassed by the police that I worry about but also being harrassed by the employees of any of the businesses I try to goto (for example, grocery shopping or something). I figure open-carry doesn't really help me any if I cannot even go anywhere while doing it. :p

Everyone worries at first about the things you mentioned, and of course there is no guarantee people won't hassle you. I think the important thing to keep in mind is that it is LEGAL to OC in NV.

Start in some small way, and always dress respectably, behaving in a mature and decorous way. There are plenty of suggestions on theis website on how to respond to the usual questions, so give them some thought. You may be pleasantly surprised that your OC'ing is a non-issue to most others. I'm sure your being from PRC has made you quite apprehensive about the whole issue, but try not to let the anti mentality prevent you from trying what you are interested in. (I'm assuming Summerlin is a separate community from Las Vegas. I know some folks OC in LV, but a young guy doing that in "the Big City" is more likely to get unwanted attention.)

Enjoy, and welcome aboard!

I concur. The first time for almost everything as a young man can be daunting.

However, just like riding a bike, it becomes something you get used to and the trepidation wears off. One tip I have is that if your strong side (where you wear your sidearm) is the same side you're carrying car keys or maybe a coffee cupin, it doesn't appear (to anyone who notices) that you're walking around with an itchy trigger finger just looking for trouble.

More than likely "nothing will happen". Especially if you look decent and are dressednicely. In the event of an emergency, you canalwaysdrop the keys or drop the coffee. But probably nothing will happen. Having car keys or a Starbucks cup in your hand on the same side as your firearm makes you appear less threatening to anyone who "notices".

Though I normally carry concealed, on those occasions where I open carry, I'm often struck by the fact that 95% of the people I encounter don't even notice. The other 5% have never dialed 911 or freaked out. The one and only comment I got one day while pumping gas was from a driver at the next pump who remarked "Hey, nice Kimber you got there..."

Stay safe, be polite, and be a goodwill ambassador who keeps his cool in the event somebody makes a wise crack or comes off as an Anti in your presence. Just smile, hold your ground, use a thought-provoking comeback and don't get into an argument.

If you should encounter any Law Enforcement officer, be prepared to present your Blue Card and be friendly and respectful, not fearful and nervous. In fact, my normal mode around law enforcement that I encounter from time to time is arespectful nod, a wave or a friendly "Thanks for being out here, officer. We appreciate it".

Did you or anyone you know open carried in Laughlin. If yes, did you open carry inside the casinos there?

I have been living in Las Vegas (outskirts) for about four and a half years now. I Open Carry to Video stores, Grocery stores, casinos, K-Mart, Walmart, etc, etc... and have only had 1 person ask me to not carry in their store. Again, I live three and a half miles from the strip, so its not like I'm down-town all the time. People that say Open Carry is rare in Vegas aren't paying attention or never leave the strip.

Have police officers seen you were carrying and if yes, what was their reaction?

Since I started carrying OC, I have only had one situation where I was even seen by LEO's. In that incident, I was leaving a Starbucks (Coffee in my strong hand) and as I passed the four officers at the table outside, one yelled "HEY." I calmy turned around and said "yes sir"? He grinned and said "whatcha carryin'"?

Normal gun-buff banter after that.

No lecture

Didn't ask for ID or blue card

And I was on my way.

so am I the only one that had my gun taken by metro cause when I sat down a bullet fell out of my cargo pocket and security freaked out and went crazy... I got it back but it was hard.. It was left in my truck and that was 1/2 a mile away yet metro went to my truck and searched it when I said they could only get the gun to run it, then my blue card is not in the system so it must be fake... with that fake then I must have a fake military ID, then with that fake I must be on drugs to have 1 bullet in my pocket and no gun on me.... lol metro is a joke I think or at least that night... well everyone that OC's in las vegas should have a meet up sometime and try to get some more to OC before that is long gone to like in kali

That's why you have to have your gun with you... Never agree for a search. Always file a Fourth Amendment violation civil lawsuit if warranted (can look up that number for you... it is filed against police all the time... and trust me it works). It sounds to me like illegal seizure....you legalized their search by trusting them...

Reference that Blue Card I see the SB 92 states that if a city, county, or town doesn't amend its ordinance requiring registration to comply with new state law that states you must be a resident for at least 60 days before being required to register, then the ordinance will be considered to comply with this new law as of January 1st by "operation of law". I will be inVegas in May and I will open carry (except the strip casinos) and I know the Las Vegas Firearms dept. is staffed by a BOOB. I did talk to her on several occasions and I received idiotic answers... Should I expect hostility from law enforcement?

If Ihave beenreading/listenting about SB92 correctly:

Itmeans: The Clark County Blue Card lawchanges to make it a 60 day period if visiting. The Jan 1st reference is about North Las Vegas and Boulder City not being able to continue to restrict carry as they have done. January 1st they are compelled to drop the restrictions, the Blue cardhas already gonefrom 24 hours to register incounty to 60 days.

OpenCarry. Even on the strip (in public areas) it's legal. Most LEO's are pros and will not give you crap. In MOST hotels, security will, however NOT allow OC. (property policy) but you can CC if you have permit in a state we have reciprocity with, (short list) and Hotel security has no real chance to get hostile.

Enjoy Vegas, and if you are of a mind to, there are more than a few Gunshops where you can shoot a full auto. WAY more fun than poker machines. lol.
