That's a great idea. Shouldn't be too long before someone decides to try and ban it! There was a good documentary on TV a few months back about piracy and merchant shipping. It's a huge problem in many parts of the world, but merchant ship crews are forbidden to arm themselves by law or by company policy or both. Ridiculous. A giant container ship has a crew of about 8-10 men. My dad and I both at the same time blurted out, "If that was MY ship I would mount a couple of .50s up on the bridge and keep a good watch". Goddamn pirates.

Here is the THR thread where I read about using a flare gun for self defense and mentioned the 'pirates plague'. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=231322

As for registering it as a AOW, would you have to register the insert or the launcher? Also looking at this picture is it worth it? When the guy in the story used it in self defense fired his it shattered.

A 25 mm flare launcher with a 25mm. flarewould by it's self make a formadible weapon. You don't need to load a 12gs. shell in it.

A 12ga flare fired from a 12ga launcher will not penetrate but a 25mm would and make one awful mess.

I'd like to see some real world tests before I'd bet my life on a 25mm flare. I have heard that 12 guage flares will bounce off cardboard.
