New York has got to be the worst state all around for handgun owners.

First, if you are from any other state in the entire U.S.; even traveling through the state with an unloaded and locked-up pistol can be a worrysome experience.

If you are from the state,like I am,any Joe Shmo in the world can call up the local PD and have them hassle you about any allegedly inappropriate action regarding your handguns. They can make up any crap and the cops will believe them, not you. Some PDs will pull your permit for up to six months for ANY reason. You have to be nice to even the Sh----iest neighbors.

AND... your guns go into police custody with the permit!!

In a very hunting friendly rural area of NY, I oncewalked into a pizza place to get takeout, WITH JUST MY HOLSTER ON MY BELT, NO GUN And the owner interrogated me as if I were psychotic. (I'm not)

Theoretically, you can OC while hunting, or while being in a legal hunting area WITH A HUNTING LICENSE and a NY Pistol Permit, giving hikers a quasi-OK to OC. Sort of. But is it really worth it? No.

Leave the handgun in the car. Carry a rifle or a shotgun.

Talk about open carry. When I hike in NY I carry my Mauser K98. Hell with them. You talk about the comments people make!

Just my 2 cents but I would avoid Open Carry in NY at all costs if you are a licenced pistol owner. It is simply not worth the hassle in this restricted state. When I choose to carry I always make sure it is fully concealed, even when hunting or hiking. If you really want to hike or hunt while open carrying VT is a wonderful choice.

I was born and raised in n.y. Long island to be exact. I now live in Florida. For years i wanted to get a pistol licence in n.y. and was discouraged, from the stories I've heard from friends that had them. My friend said he went to the store and bent down to get the paper and a woman saw his pistol in the holster in his waist band. She asked him if he was an officer? he replied no why? You shouldn't be carrying that you know! He kindly said to her that its my right and i have a licence. And I've heard of worse situations. And its like pulling teeth to get a pistol licence in n.y. It needs to change.

I am from long island, I think that there was so much gun violence in the 70s and 80s that people dont want to see that happening again. I am not sure, its just a guess.

People who think that a general prohibition on guns would have any positive effect on crime, seriously need to grow a brain. It didn't work with alcohol, if anything it created MORE criminals... which is what happens when more things are illegal, duh!

More importantly... the very fact that ANY infringement upon the people's right to keep AND bear arms is un-constitutional, should be the only argument necessary to convince any patriotic American of the evil which 'gun-control' represents.

What this country needs is CRIMINAL CONTROL... If we actually started placing the burden of responsibility for criminal acts upon the people who committed them, instead of the in-animate objects which were used in their commission, the people themselves would be forced to evaluate their own personal responsibility, and consequences, for their actions.

Your normal law-abiding citizen is not scared of laws. Your normal law-abiding citizen is scared of theconsequences of what will happen to them if they break the law.

This is the major problem today, the consequences of laws today are either not stiff enough, or they are "plea bargined" down to the point that criminals could care less about them.

How long is it going to take the Anti's to figure this out.

NY has a population of 19 Million with 8-9 Million of those living in NY City. Throw in the the other big cities around the state and you have your answer.

Although NY is a very rural state our politics are dominated by a few large cities and their urbanwayof living and excessiveuse of social services.

There are too many liberals and just plan apathetic voters in this state. Hell, HILLARY GOT ELECTED. How did that ever happen???????. She is a carpetbagger but the voting public didnt care. My conservative pro gun vote is all but useless in this state.

I can see why you New York staters have problems. I'm from Illinois and wish Illinois could get rid of Chicago, with 3 million residents in a state of 13 million they have too much control of the legislature, and some other cities in that northeastcorner aren't much better. The current governor is from Chicago and is almost never in the state capital. Still we almost got a uniform firearms transportation bill passed last year but the governor got a couple of legislators to change their vote so they couldn't override his veto. At least you can transport a handgun in Illinois and even fly out of Chicago's O'Hare airport.

I live in southern Illinois and we have a village down here (Goreville) that passed an ordinance that every household have a firearm, about the time Morton Grove Illinois ( a Chicago suburb) passed a handgun ban.

It's because America feels so strongly about affirmative action that they need to apply it to the presidency. Apparently "America needs a woman president" regardless of who that woman is.

But anyhow, it seems like the only solution to being safe and secure in NY is... to not step foot in NY state. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't: you can either concealed carry a handgun illegally and protect your life, property, and your loved ones; or, you can comply with the totalitarian gun laws and leave yourself and family to get robbed, tortured, raped, and/or killed. Great choice, eh?

To anyone unlucky enough to live in NY: come to Pennsylvania! You can even protect yourself when you're in our cities (even though Rendell, et al are doing all they can to change that). I hear New Hampshire is charming too...

It's due to the high concentration of liberals in big cities, in new york you have one of the biggest. That's how we in PA got a Dem and a Weenie in the senate, and a Moron for Governor, Philly and Pittsburgh Liberals

I grew up in rural upstate NY and can never go back due to the politics.
It's a darn shame. I love my home town and homestead. People wonder why I despise the city and the scumbuckets that live there. Well other than the usual which you can experience yourself by going to the city it is that they completely ruined my beautiful state.

All I have to say is GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!!! NY SUXS SO BAD! I went to the bronx to visit an old friend back in 2002 on my way to CT. My friend told me I had to call the police and let them know that I possessed a gun and was visiting. They told me I had 24 hours to get the gun and myself out of the state or register it with them and I could stay longer. You can't imagine how pissed I was at that time. Come to Arizona with your conservative pro gun vote. We will adopt you!

I'm from Upstate NY and I remember the gun law there. Make you jump through hoops I thin kit could be easier to get a top secret clearance form the Federal Government. Then after all that the last line in the law is that it is up to the desecration of the issuing officer. So even if you pass all the test if they do not want to give it to you will not have one.
