Mayor Bill Euille of Alexandria has joined Mayor Bloomberg's MAIG Coalition.

http://www.mayorsagainstillegalguns.org/html/home/home.shtml

I have already let him know how I feel (waste of time and money, will do nothing to get criminals off the streets.)

Please let him know as well. He can be contacted at

http://alexandriava.gov/contactus/view_contactus.pxe

Also copy his aide, Beth Temple.

It would only take a few minutes and I think it is worthwhile to let him know that not everybody shares his opinion.

Hi, XD. I looked at the "mayor's "Org" site. I'm still removing the last of the duct tape from around my head:banghead:. Even though I'm a resident of Fx. Co. (100 yards from Alex) I'm going to voice my displeasure, as you suggested.

OK, here is some suggested text which I encourage people to modify so all messages to Alexandria City Hall do not look and sound the same.

Dear Mayor Euille:

I hear that you have joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition.

I want to let you know that this coalition is really an effort to subvert the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which declares in clear terms that individuals have the right to keep and bear arms. I ask that you withdraw your support. Will you withdraw from New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s gun grabbing coalition?

[OR - Please do not waste any time or money on this utopian effort to make the world a safer place. Guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens make the community safer. I agree that criminals need to be denied access to guns, but just like you do not deny a Constitutionally protected right for all people just because a few may abuse it, please withdraw your support for this effort to deny guns to law-abiding people. Will you make all people register their computers or require a license because a few people use their computers for criminal purposes like passing child pornography over the Internet?

Look at New York City's gun laws which Mayor Bloomber is trying to export across the country. People cannot have guns there, except the police, yet crime is much higher there than here in Alexandria where law-abiding people can get guns. A black man in New York recently was killed by policewhen several undercover officers thought a man had a gun. As you know, none of the people killed or injured had a gun in that tragic incident. As a black man, I hope you can sympathize with the victims and their families.]

Guns per se are not illegal, so it is plain stupid to join a coalition against a legal product. Lock up criminals who use guns to hurt people or steal from people. New anti-gun laws are not needed.

For example, when a convicted felon is found to be in possession of a gun, they can be immediately arrested and prosecuted. When a person commits a felony with a gun, again, they can be arrested (if caught) and prosecuted. Do not try to take away guns from law-abiding citizens. You merely disarm them and make it easier for criminals to commit their heinous crimes. Don’t you agree?

Thank you and I hope to receive a reply from you soon.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

FYI - from their site.........................

"Mayors Against Illegal Guns will hold a National Summit in Washington, DC on January 23, 2007. The program will run from 9:30 AM until 2:30 PM followed by an evening reception. Please note that the summit will be held the day before the opening of the 75th Winter Meeting of the US Conference of Mayors, which will be held in Washington from January 24 through January 26.

Coalition members are currently being contacted and sent specific information about schedules and hotel reservations at the Capital Hilton."

Shall we invite them to lunch earlier that day? At an OCDO meet-up (removing tongue from its firm lodging in cheek.)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I added a couple paragraphs personal to me, and rearranged some of the sentences around, but your form letter was a GREAT start. Hopefully everybody in the area can take 5 minutes to write up a letter to our misguided Mayor.

Done. Took your basic outline, but except for the order of ideas, changed most so it didn't sound the same. Used PVC's line - "Please let me know what you're going to do." at the end.

Emphasized that what affects Alexandria city affects us all in Fairfax County.

Thanks for the strawman.

I was going to suggest we all get together at First Night Alexandria - Mayor Euille will be opening it - but I don't know if I'll have to work, and crowds are not my thing.

I'd go to make a point.

Interest????

I might recommend referrencing Washington DC instead of (or in addition to) NYC, since it's even worse and they sit on Alexandria's doorstep.

It occurs to me that there's nothing I need to go to Alexandria for - ever. I can spend my money quite easily in other jurisdictions.
