Lately I've had problems holding down a job, I've gone through several jobs in the past 6 months. I've had a couple construction type jobs and I've worked at a local movie rental place as well as working at the local Target. I wasn't happy with any of the jobs, either they didn't pay enough or the work was too physically demanding (I'll admit it, I'm lazy) or the job just sucked in general. However, I think I've finally found the career I've been looking for.
I recently got hired on by a big security guard company out of Richmond. Anyway, I think I've got a pretty gravy job and I was wondering what you guys think of it.
The job is at a local book distribution plant. The main building is 600 yards by 300 yards. That's pretty darn big! Basically, I have an hour to complete one patrol which usually only takes 20 minutes at most. I was told that I can pretty much do whatever I wanted to make that patrol last the full hour. That includes reading one of the books, smoking a cigarette, pretty much what ever I want. There's a secondary building that I have to patrol three times a night that's 3 miles away. I get paid $9.50 an hour plus milage to and from the secondary building.
At this point, I'm only working the one site working two twelve hour shifts a week. But I've got a lot of bills and I'm going to need more hours/money to be able to survive. I live in the middle of no where and there's only a few jobs available within driving distance. I know there's one job at a gate house nearby but I don't really like dealing with a lot of people so I'd rather not take that job. The site that I'm working at now, I'm the only one there the entire time.
Basically, I'm just wondering how good I've got it. To me, it sounds like a pretty gravy job. But I'm just wondering what should I expect for the second site that I'm going to need to start working at? Should I expect pretty much the same or am I to expect all night paperwork and such from the second site.
Another question for you all. I've got some body armor that I've been looking for a reason to wear. Do you think it'd be alright to wear it while I'm on duty? I can't wear a gun on duty and I feel akward going on duty without some sort of protection. I don't want to ask the company for fear that they'd say no. I mean I'm in the middle of no where, you can't get in the door without a pass card (either that or just blowing the door off the hinges with C-4 or something) and most people don't even know what the place is at least I never did until I started working there. So the chances that anyone will try to break in or something is slim to none but I don't have to explain to you guys that I'd rather have the protection and not need it than to need it and not have it.
So what do you all think of the job and the idea of wearing some body armor? Thanks for any and all your input.
