I eat at the one in Woodbridge near Potomac Millsoften.
The last time I was there, I was there with full family (7 including kids). Both my father and I were carrying. A man asked us about it, because he thought it was illegal to carry there because of the "liquor". I explained it to him and he said thank youand walked right out the door.

About 10 minutes later he walks back in with his glock on his hip and him and my father have a conversation about glocks until he was seated.

One of things I am starting to notice - establishments withgun bans seem to be waning in their support for their own gun bans faster lately when confronted by the fact that folks want to spend money there while armed.

Capitalism. Good system.

i carried openly near pentagon city metro, ballston common, lee highway, wendys, CVS, shoppers, costco by the crystal city, giant food store by bailey crossroads, starbucks no problem. If you dress normal half casual and be focused on what you doing no one bothers u by asking u anything. Not even the cops. Couple FCPD noticed when I entered 7-11 by 7400 lee hwy, i even hold the door for them when goin in. No problem at all, no questions about my guy either. Very professional.

also i noticed that its all about your attitude towards people and cops. THey look for certain tone of voice and gesture when you are carrying either open or concleaed. OFC from FCPD told me that if you dress normal, behave normal, and going about your business we dont worry about it. When ever we see, hesitation, different tone of voice with aggressiveness, different cocky attitude thats when mostly they get questioned or gets detained for further verification. They want us to behave like cops, professional in and out the whole time . Also OC guys dont have to waive or nodge their head or greet cops if they encounter. When they do it makes them even more nervous. :)

I can understand a cop, manageror anyone at all being suspiciousofapersonthatiscarrying whois acting like they have something to hide, especially after 9-11. Anyone who is lookingstrange, odd or suspicious (armed or not) would natually drawattention to themself and make people wonder if there is something to fear. You are right in thatas long aspeoplewhoarecarryingact normal and dressas to notbring unwantedattention their wayoftenwill be left alone. Most people who carry aremature, responsibile and law abiding. It'sthugsthat give anti-gunnerstheir opportunitiesto sound off with their twisted logic and lies that makelife harder for people who carry.

There is a lot to be said for looking calm, deliberate, and confident when carrying. Simply if you look like you are allowed to carry, most people will believe that you are. Even if they aren't sure or don't know that open carry is legal, if their mind can believe that you are an authorized person they won't do anything. It's a psychological function called cognitive dissonance. Basically it's rationalization of something disturbing.

I completely agree with you that peoplewill be moresuspicious of someone who is acting uneasily while open carrying, but I still don't understand whytheywould think thatanyone OCingwould show their weapon like that, and then try to pull something.

They don't think. Most people become at least alert around danger--whatever it is that they consider dangerous. That's where we come in with OC. Exactly what we're trying to de-sensitize, for want of a better word.

I've read somewhere in recent months that police become alert to people who look them in the eye becausea bad guy will do it when heis making them a target in his mind. I don't recall whether this is a naturalextension of Condition Yellow, or part of their police training, or what. Anybody come across the same or similar information?

Yup, I reported that place to VCDL after I was asked to place my firearm in my car or leave. Guess which option I chose? :D

This may be slightly off the subject but maybe not entirely.

I have lived in 8 states, including Virginia for one year about 30 years ago.During that year Ihad many experiences that left me with the strong feeling that I was living in a socialist police state. I have carefully avoided ever going back there.

But as I read the comments from Virginians here as well as on other firearms-related sites I get the feeling that a miracle has occurred. The descriptions of the rational attitude toward firearms that appears to exist in the state are very far removed from the impressions of the lack of any kind of freedomsthatI have carried with me for 30 years.

How did you-the gun owners of Virginia-do it?

When he left, I asked my wife if I said something wrong - if I wasn't polite or if I did something to upset him. I thought I had upset it himand that is why he left. After I explained the laws to him, he stood up suddenly, said "Thank you" and made an exit. I thought I had met someone who was against guns and just polite to people that wore them. I was very happy to see him come back in OC'ing.

There was also the fear that he would call and complain to the Outback and we would be asked to leave after already waiting about25 minutes (we were told the wait was 45-50 minutes when we got there).

Hawes,

Contact Virginia Citizens Defense League at vcdl.org. We had a big hand in it, although it was before I became a member. My understanding is that it took more than voting, but not a lot. Its my understanding that we found a member of the Virginia legislature willing to introduce a bill erasing the hodge-podge of local ordinances against firearms in one degree or another. I have just a very little verbal info on how it happened. Members of the VCDL Board of Directors will be able to tell you the full story.
