Thanks to a member of the combact carry forum I came to the knowledge that open carry is legal in NC providing you obey basically the same restrictions as you must when having a CCW permit. I have had my CCW permit for 8 years and while I would not want to OC often it was fun to soo some reactions. I live right on the state line, so I went and got gas this afternoon in NC, It was obvious a couple people saw the weapon, but no action or comments were made. I then proceeded across the state line in VA to eat at my favorite country diner. It was fairly crowded and I sat down in the back of the no smoking section, just my luck in came two Yankee couples. They sat down at the table next to me and began stating how much they missed NY and how awful the south is. They ordered tea, and around here you'll get sweet tea unless you say different, well they took a drink and started complaing to the waitress that there was way to much sugar in their tea and "where there from, the tea is brough unsweetened, the way it should be". Then one of the men complained his knife was dirty. The waitress was being a saint and I was biting my tougue. One of the men had a Thriftey Nickel newspaper, and made a comment that there was a AK47 for sale, and he thought it was awful that these "army guns" could be bought so easily. We are in deer season here, and one of the women made a comment about all the pick up's with guns in the window. One male says to his buddy, "het, I think I'll sell my BMW and buy a old junky 4x4 truck and put a gun rack in the back window". I am really getting upset and can only hope the waitress is spitting in their food, back in the kitchen. Well I get up to leave, and turn to squeeze out and you could have heard a pin drop at their table when they all stopped talking and just stared. One of the Lady's said "are you a police officer?", I said " no maam, y'all have a nice trip North" and turned and walked out the door. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to hear their discussion afterwards. Now before you jump on me for not covering up to avoid this conversation, let me say I was perfectly withing the law for doing what I was doing. I could have really told this lady what I thought of her and others like her, but it would have only portrayed Southerners in a bad way as well as gun owners so this was avoided, it is people like this why we have the stupid gun laws we have today. BTW, I am not against all Yankees, some of them are very nice folks, but others turn my stomach and they are moving into the south quicker than the illegal mexicans, not sure which is the worser of two evils. Just had to vent.
I will say other than the restaraunt it was a positive experience, but I will probably stay with CC. But it's nice to know I have other options.
