I asked about the "no ammo if you have a gun on you" policy. They said "it's for the safety for employees and customers".

I asked to speak to the manager, but got an assistant manager. She said it's store policy. I asked if it's corporate policy. She said "yes". Then she said it's policy that I couldn't even have the gun in the store with a permit or not.

Why do you have a policy saying that you can't sell ammo to someone with a firearm AND have a policy that says "no firearms" in store???? :banghead:

I said, but you have no signs about no guns. She gave me this stupid look like - :uhoh:.

So I said, are you asking me to leave?"Yes",shesaid. So I left. I called the corporate office and left a message.

Will let you know what happens.

Both

I went looking at the targets and the policy came to mind, so I thought I would just ask. I like to make waves from time to time.

Keep us in the loop on any responses from corporate.
Apparently, that number (in the voicemail) was for stores across the water. :(
It should not matter. It was a message from a district office stating there corp. policy. Please follow up on this and let us all know. BTW which store was this. It might be worth taking a trip up your way soon.

When I got the phone call, it was my understanding she was giving the corporate policy. I also believe she was from the regional office, but I'm not sure what areas the region emcompases.

Since this issue is a recurrent one for this store, I doubt it has much to do with the "Black Man with a Gun" aspect. I think it is best explained by "aggravated mopery" on the part of the employee/manager. I hope we get some written correspondence for corporate on this, so we can all make xeroxes and carry them with us in future forays in to Wally World!

Does the Hampton Wal-Mart still sell guns?

I keep hearing about Wal-Mart phasing out guns, but I've see no sign of that from the Yorktown Wal-Mart (and Newport News Wal-Mart occasionally) that I frequent.

Danbus,
When you are contacted by corporate, would you p;ease ask for something in writing? If we can get ahold of a document on Wal-Mart letterhead, signed by someone at headquarters, it can be posted, then xeroxed by anyone on OCDO. Phil Van Cleave would probably post a copy on VCDL as well. Since Wal-Mart is the nation's largest retailer, and claims it conforms its policy to the laws of the individual states, it would be great if all of us could carry a letter to use whenever some local manager has an acute attack of liberalism upon seeing a firearm.

If you're up for some saber rattling, I found the found number for Walmart's Insurance/Liability/Legal Department (800-527-0566 x20627 Mrs. Sue Kofoid)

I have dealt with them in the part on an unrelated matter, and they call the shots.
They dictate policy down the line and make legal settlements.

Whether they will entertain your call or not.. it all depends on how you phrase it in terms of liability.

It wouldn't hurt to have an official from maybe VCDL call this Mrs. Kofoid and request a written statement.

I got a call today from Wal-Mart corporate, and was told that he sent out an email to all the Wal-Marts stating that we can carry openly and should we have the need to purchase ammo, they will escort us and the ammo to the door, and give it to us once we are outside. He also said he will call me back when he hears from the higher ups about the EXACT policy.

Funny, we should buy ammo first THEN walk around the store for little things with them carrying our ammo. :p

I buy ammo at a WalMart in Fairfax County while OCing and just walk myself out, or continue to browse. But at least this report is progress.

Can you image 4 folks going in, each buying ammo, and wach then browsing?

Four shoppers might cause some consternation. Maybe after the next OCDO dinner, a dozen or more of us could go shopping together for a few hundred dollars worth of ammo, and see if they can rally enough people to escort us all.

I buy four hundred rounds or so per trip to WalMart. I don't shoot this qty each range trip. I buy this qtyto cut down on trips. Becausethis qty of ammunition is a bit heavy, I do all my othershopping first; then I go to Sporting Goods. Another advantage is that I avoid the long lines at the front of the store and pay for everything at the Sporting Goods counter.Leaving immediately after purchase would align exactly withmy intentions, so its not a huge loss for me if they want to enforce an escort-out policy. It'll give me an opportunity to make friends with the escort and create one more person who thinkswell of armed citizens.

Maybe a quick note to WalMart that it would be pointless to escort the OCers out of the store. There's been a lot of ammo purchased in Wal-Marts. I'm sure there were plenty of CC-er's making purchases. Nothing's happened tomy knowledge. If the ammunition goes in a double-bag, which itoften does anyway for strength, nobody else knows.Gently suggesting discriminationby pointing out that they do not escort out people who buy other sporting items might help.

I've made friends with the Sporting Goods clerks atmyWal-Mart. It helps to be on good terms with the people you do business with. I've had them go out of their way for me.Can't have too many friends, unless its your turn to buy.
