My wife and I just got our first pistols. Unfortunately we cant carry open or concealed in MD. I do know you can open carry easily in VA. Are there any open carry groups that get together in VA that arent too far from MD?

Welcome Haroon!

You are looking for The Virginia Citizens Defense League (vcdl.org)

Next meeting in Annandale, VA this Thursday (Mar 15) at 7:30 PM

PM me if you are unfamiliar with Northern VA and want directions to the meeting or just feel uncomfortable open carrying in general. I live in Annandale and would be happy to meet you somewhere (in Annandale) to take you to the meeting place which is a police station (while open carrying).

Meeting location:

Haroon, Well this IS the place to find open carriers. :) We, open carriers, do get together for dinner about once a month in the Northern VA area. Keep an eye on this forum. You can also apply for a non resident Concealed Handgun Permit through the VA State Police.

Welcome to OCDO!!!

Welcome Haroon! Gotta get you away from the "Dark Side" and over here into Free America!

I'd bring my wife to this Thursday's meeting, but she has a test in the hospital that morning, so I'm not sure if I'll even be there.

There are several legends as too how it aquired the nickname of the Free State.

1. In an editorial against prohibtion the editor referred to MD as The Free State, saying it would secede before it would prohibit the sale of alcohol.

2. The first Free State slaves would come to while escaping from the South.

3. Free from religious persecution, many Virginians, I think Puritans, moved to Maryland to escape religious persecution.

I think it is probably #1 but 2 and 3 sound like a better/PC thing to teach kids.

The only thing free about Maryland now is, you are still free to leave, which I did.:D

Can babies be brought to these meetings? I only ask because I just had mine and not sure if I would be able to find someone to watch him ...

One husband and wife brought their three kids (littlest still in a carrier) to the last meeting. No VCDLer raised any fuss. The FCPD volunteer(??) watching the police desk asked that we not congregate with children in the community center's lobby since "the police may need to bring a prisoner into that area."

If they thought it was dangerous to be in the lobby why do they have chairs there?
