Mystery gunman disrupts assault in Wilmington
Officers are seeking a shooter who intervened in an attack by gang members in Wilmington. Three people were wounded.

Two men who were attacked by armed gang members at a Wilmington coin-operated laundry Sunday night told police an unidentified man intervened and shot the antagonists -- and then disappeared, authorities said.
Police were seeking the man Monday, and said they believe he may have been defending the two men, one of whom had been shot in the leg, and would not be charged with any crime.
The unknown man shot a 16-year-old boy, who was in critical condition Monday at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and an adult suspect, officials said.
Ricardo Garcia, 23, of Wilmington was taken to a hospital with a gunshot to the thigh, said Los Angeles Police Department Detective David Cortez. Garcia was released Monday and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, Cortez said. He said Garcia and the teen are members of the same Wilmington-area street gang.
Garcia and the juvenile male allegedly approached two men about 10:45 p.m. Sunday outside the Spin Cycle Coin Laundry, 317 W. Pacific Coast Highway, as the men waited for their clothes to wash, Cortez said.
"They asked them questions about what they were doing there," Cortez said. "They were very aggressive toward them. One brandished a handgun."
Police did not identify the men accosted by the gang members, but Cortez said one had recently been discharged from the Marine Corps. He was the victim shot in the leg.
Suddenly, another man approached and shot Garcia and the juvenile, Cortez said. Then, he ran away.
"We're not sure if he did it to defend the victims or if he knew the suspects," Cortez said. "He started shooting at the suspects. One is in critical condition with a through-and-through gunshot wound to his chest."
The wounded laundry patron was not seriously injured. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
Cortez said the victims expressed thanks for the mystery man's actions. "The two victims who were originally assaulted said that if it wasn't for the other guy, they would be dead," Cortez said. "They were harassing them. One guy told him he just got out of the Marine Corps, and pled with the suspects to leave them alone."
Witnesses told investigators that the suspects called out a gang name. The laundry is located on a border area between two rival gangs.
