Walking out of a Springfield 7-Eleven, I passed again a woman who was waiting in front of the store. After I was beyond her,she asked in a soft voice, "Excuse me, sir. Are you a law enforcement officer? I'm from Chicago. We don't see much of that." Friendly tone. She was almost done asking by the time I got stopped and turned around. I was greeted by a pleasant, slightly embarrassedsmile. I was on my way back to work, so all Ihad time for was a smile and a quick friendly reply to the effect that I was just a citizen taking self-defense seriously.
