Let's chat about our rifles and the way we have pimped them out.

I would like to get ideas on what other people have installed and why. What to buy and the best place to buy it.

This is also the place to submit photos to show off what we have done so far.

I have a RRA mid length that I've tricked out a bit. I have a flat top, standard front sight and RRA rear with a cheap Tasco optic in case I break it at work training. I have an Aimpoint, just no need to add it right now.

I left the handguards and drilled holes to add the rails I need. I can't justify a 4 rail system, even in Iraq. I have one on the bottom for the vertical grip and one on the bottom/right at a 45 degree angle to mount the Sure-Fire weapon light. The light is meant to mount flush with the muzzle to be used as a non-lethal striking tool. I put it farther back so I can thumb the tail cap with out removing my hand from the grip. I don't use pressure pads, they fail and you end up using the tail cap anyways. Not to mention, the wire can snag if you're moving in and out of cars often.

I put an addon spacer with rings for a single point harness to attach to. I use a single point bungee.

You can get a Crane or Vltor stock or you could just get a standard collapsable and put CAA's stock saddle on it. It does the same thing for a lot less money.

I got some of my mags with Magpuls on them and the rest I just taped. I would actually recommend taping instead of using Magpuls or lolas. The tape will fit into a pouch better thanthe other options. I have a couple mags doubled up, just make sure you stagger them right so you can still eject empties with the left mag in the well. If you do double up mags, check out the RangerPlate ( I think thats what its called ) as it replaces your top round for the 2nd mag in a stack and prevents the recoil from forcing the top round out of normal position and causing feeding issues. In your 30 round mags, only put 28 in it. 30 compresses the springs funny and can cause misfeeds. Why 28 and not 29? Its meant to take that first round from the right side of the mag.

I can give you links to the websites of most the manufactures for the addons I have.

There is always someone out there selling it for less. :D Takes a few minutes to find them on the Internet. Actually, you just get someone who loves to shop and find the best price... my wife!! She bought the items for me.

I am now looking to get a RRA 10.5" barrel and a scope. I have been eyeballing the Trijicon models at the moment. Looking to see what else is out there and what others are using.

I checked the prices at the Expo gun show and was shocked at the "almost retail" prices!

Actually... I have been issued an M-16 that I carry for work. My safe at home welcomes the M-16 and the Pimp Rifle too. :D

I still need to put together a tactical vest with upgraded armor. Ceramic plates would work well. Not that I expect trouble but... I want to be prepared.

I've got the lightweight negative bouyant chicken plates...multi-hit rated up to 7.62 API. $1100 a plate! Good protection don't come cheap!

If you need some info on good vests or plate hangers let me know. I used to work at a supply store and still have my contacts in IC. Actually, vests suck, get a good plate carrier that you can MOLLE your own pouches on in any config you desire. Eagle and Paraclete make good ones as does Patriot Performance.

Thanks LEO for starting this thread! I love your accessories list.

It's amazing how easy it is spend more $$ in accessories than you'll spend on the basic rifle! I bought this:

http://www.dpmsinc.com/firearms/5.56x45mm/ap4_carbine.aspx

I've spend some time sighting in the iron sites, and a cheapo red-dot. I'm finding I'm going to need a target scope to do better than 4" groups at 100 yards because my eyes can barely see the target. I'm not planning to doing much to this setup because I love it's deadly simplicity and light weight as-is, but I'm seriously considering a target upper for it so that I can drive tacks at 500 yards.

Ya... and I am not done yet. I still need a scope, 10.5 " barrel, bipod, hard case, laser sight, and more!! :D

You need to dress it up once in a while...!!

Where did you go to sight it in?

What scopes are you looking so far?

I have a membership at Black Creek Range. I'd like a target/sniper scope that I can install on the target upper and I don't want to break the bank. There were some nice uppers at the last Richmond gun show. I'll probably pick one up at the next show in May.

I gather I would need a license for the 10.5" barrel, and the muzzle blast is probably fierce.

For the 10.5" you just need to fill out an ATF Form 1 to request to modify your rifle for the short barrel. You pay a one time tax of $200 and that is all. You just cannot take it out of state unless you notify the ATF first.

http://www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/f53201.pdf

I only have a mortgage to pay so I can afford to spend a little extra for a good scope :D

The muzzle blast should not be any different for the short barrel.

I was shocked at the prices the Expo Center gun show was charging for their stuff!! I will continue to search the Internet for better prices.

My favorite: the guy selling my exact AR-15 stock for $175 when it retails for $55 online!

I'll have a post up shortly with my AR and links to accessories (including overpriced stock).

Not that I need it.. more that I want it. :D You guys know what that is about. It would look good on my shorter barrel.

Ekk!

Shorter barrel = lower velocity. I want to keep my 0-100 yard velocity above 2,500 ft/s, the magic number required for yaw and fragmentation in soft tissue. Oh wait, this is a plinking gun, kinda like a 10/22. Forget the soft tissue comment...

Don't dismiss the shorty. We use em because its easier to get in and out of a suburban with and they work just fine. Give you a headache quicker though as the concussion hits ya.

This is the problem that was discussed in another thread about the drawbacks of the Kel-Tec PLR-16. An integral suppressor would be really nice in that gun, but this is a thread about AR-15s and CARs so I'll shut up now. (At least until I take some photos of my tricked-out M4gery to post here.) :D

I have decided to skip the short barrel for my rifle and will buy an MP5 instead. The wife has already approved the purchase. I have one lined up and waiting for a response.

Anyone know a Class III dealer in the area that is friendly?

You could try Stockman Sporting Goods. I've seen
them at the last few Fredericksburg gun shows and has had several class III weapons on display for sale. I almost bought my AR/M4gery from him but I didn't have proof of citizenship with me.

When people ask about purchasing such a weapon, he gives a good explaination on the process and costs. He seems like a decent guy while chatting with him. This is a side business for him but said he will do FFL transfers.

Thanks... I will need to have it transferred since it is out of state.

I have always wanted an MP5. I fell in love with it when I fired it at the range last year.
