Teachers stage fake gun attack on kids
Sun May 13, 5:28 PM ET

Staff members of an elementary school staged a fictitious gun attack on students during a class trip, telling them it was not a drill as the children cried and hid under tables.

The mock attack Thursday night was intended as a learning experience and lasted five minutes during the weeklong trip to a state park, said Scales Elementary School Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip.

"We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation," he said.

But parents of the sixth-grade students were outraged.

"The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them," said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.

Some parents said they were upset by the staff's poor judgment in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman.

During the last night of the trip, staff members convinced the 69 students that there was a gunman on the loose. They were told to lie on the floor or hide underneath tables and stay quiet. A teacher, disguised in a hooded sweat shirt, even pulled on locked door.

After the lights went out, about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said.

"I was like, 'Oh My God,' " she said. "At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out."

Principal Catherine Stephens declined to say whether the staff members involved would face disciplinary action, but said the situation "involved poor judgment."

Poor judgement, maybe, but the sad thing is that these teachers, or at least the one who thought of the idea will probably be let go, and that is sick.

People complain about everything now, and if they really were being shot up, then the parents would have complained they never drilled the kids on it.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

The teachers that did this should be commended for their efforts to teach self defense and roll back the deadly teachings of pacifism. This is long overdo since most parents, it seams, are not teaching their children to stand up for them selves. It is refreshing to see that someone is trying to teach real lessons of life. Many people will react very negatively to their actions however since life is no easy cake walk neither should the lessons be. Exercises just like this should be the norm, just like the old "duck and cover" exercises of the cold war days, only this would truly be beneficial.

Help me out here. I am trying to figure out where the administrators were teaching the children self defense by instructed them to lie on the floor and hide under tables.

This story did make the dumb ass of the day on one of the local stations here in Memphis...and rightfully so.

What would anyone expect from a bunch of NEA folks? :banghead: The teach pacifism (lie on the floor and hide as self-defense) and sheepleness. That is all they know how to do.

Well, if you gave the admins and teachers guns...and ammo...lots of ammo...

And maybe some of the older students too (and not just the boys). Then you'd have a non-pacifistic solution to the problem. The problem being--not enough guns in the schools. ;)

I can't see how a kid gets suspended or expelled for bringing an air-gun or knife to school and teachers can give a mortal scare to kids but not suffer.

If that part about "this is not a drill" is true, they need to be crucified.

Mild talk about "poor judgement" is way below appropriate.

It makes sense in a way, though. What level of judgement would you expect from people who can barely educate their charges, indoctrinate them in PC, etc. etc.

If it had been my kids, outrage wouldn't begin to describe it.

I was basing it off of a TV media clip I saw that actually showed the kids rushing the perpetrator. The article version seemed tohave forgotten that small insignificant point I guess.
I probably should have mentioned that I saw it on TV as well.

Somehow, I think there are muchmore productive possibilities by having teachers and adminsistrators rushing a perpetrator than 11year old students. But unarmed attackees rushing a gunman a lastditch effort, an utterly odious one, one which wouldn't even come into play with an effective security strategy/operationalization for theschool kids/teachers/staff/admins assemblage.

It's like Flight 93: sure it was right to rush the hijackers. But by then all was pretty much lost for the passengers anyway.

The problem is not how to have unarmed humansrush onsite murderous perpetrators with guns.:banghead:

Well it is a better strategy than waiting to die under a table or desk. Since the teachers are left powerless due to misguided, not to mention illegal, laws this is all that can be done. I am not saying it is the correct way because the correct way has been made illegal; but it is better than nothing. If you’re going to go down…go down fighting. There will always be at least two views concerning kids being taught to resist an oppressive force; that is the way it is with everything. I just support and truly believe in the side of resistance I would much rather see the 'meet force with force' method but since that is not possible in a school environment the only other option is to meet force with the force of many.
Some may agree with my views and the rest will disagree….we are all entitled to publicly display our own opinions.

Nah, more can be done. Don't settle for mediocrity. "Better than nothing" thinking doesn't solve anything. "That is not possible" bias defeats before one even gets started.

Thinking about what the problem really is is the first, and necessary, step to constructing a solution. The problem is not how to have unarmed humansrush onsite murderous perpetrators with guns. That is an approach based on simplism.

BTW, I've checked several accounts of the Scales Elementary School story and none of them mention an aspect of "rushing the perpetrator." Are you talking about the same case?

There was a video on Fox news while they were talking about this actual incident that showed students rushing the (in media lingo) 'Gun man'. It is possible that the video was from something else but it was in a school, it is truly hard to tell anymore.
I will always continue to believe in fighting back with any means possible.

I think that video is from training done at a school district down in Texas IIRC. Teaching the students to dogpile on a active shooter.

I am in agreement that violence shall be met with defensive violence. However, it should not be up to 11 and 12 year old children to defend themselves unarmed against an armed assailant. It is my belief that the adminstrators/adults (I use the term loosely) to rush the assailant.

Preferably, though, I call for school bans on guns to be repealed. Allowing law-abiding gun owners to carry their firearms in school to protect the children that they are gurdians over while in school.
