Boise Cabela's is prohibiting Open Carry!

Basically I was asked if I was sworn LE and when I said no, I was told to leave and take my gun off. It wasn't handled very professionally by the person who confronted me and the follow-up "manager" type. Apparently CC is ok, but not OC... then he proceeded to tell me what I believe to surely be a made up story about accidental discharges and people waving guns around.

I then informed them that I would no longer do business with them and neither would my 20 or so friends that I know share the same convictions that I do and admonished them that it was rather bad business to alienate the exact people/demographic they market to, to spend money in their stores.

This could be similar to my recent experience at Sportsman's Wharehouse, and I'll look into this as maybe they're just confused, as the rule is possibly just for guns going to get traded in/worked on etc.

untill it's cleared up, I'm not spending a dime there... sad for them, they were the only place in town that had the Benelli shotgun my bro wanted to buy that day!

I'm extremely surprised at their position. I will do some checking from my end but will not consider catalog order if this checks out and will so advise them.
Yata hey

To Cabela's:
What is your company's position on the lawful carry of firearms in your store. Do you follow the laws of the state in which the store is located? i.e. open carry and/or concealed carry in accordance with those laws.
Some confusing and discerning information has come to light regarding the Boise location. I will make your response available to the groups to which I belong. I look forward to your response.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I recently read of an individual at your Boise, ID store being asked to leave for lawfully open carrying a firearm in compliance with Idaho law. He was first asked if he was a law enforcement officer and when he informed that he wasn't was asked to leave.

I will cease doing business with Cabela's and communicate my reasons for doing so to the shooting sports and firearm's right community and encourage them to do the same. If this was done in error by your management at that store please correct the problem and inform me of your actions.

Sincerely,

A valued customer

I have recently been informed of an individual thatwas asked to leave your Boise, Idaho store for legally carrying his firearm in accordance with both state and federal firearm laws. I find it hard to believe that Cabela's would willfully discriminate against the very customers that they depend on. I have five friends, all who were planning on placing orders for next years hunting equipment with you, who have put their orders on hold until this is matter is corrected. We will not do business with a company that claims to value their outdoor customers and yet is against their customers exercising their rights to legally bear arms. If there has been an error, I would appreciate it if you would correct your manager’s actions and inform me of this. I will be sharing your response with my friends.

I sent an email, received this today:

Thank you for the recent email. I am very sorry for the confusion that
took place at our retail location.
Our corporate office has taken action in regards to the below mentioned
issue and here is what has been decided.
We have made the decision to comply with state laws in regards to open
carry. We do not ask customers to check concealed or open carry weapons
where the state has laws governing this situation. Our signs refer to
firearms that are being returned or sold to Cabela's.
If you are still having problems please feel free to let us know

Thanks again

As a note...I sent my email through the general web input posted on this forum. I almost immediately received a reply from an associate saying they would pass the input along. At the bottom of that email is said my case status was "SOLVED".
I replied back that my issue was *not* solved, as in my initial email I requested a reply about wether this was a Cabelas policy, or a manager acting incorrectly. Then I received the email you see.

Thanks for welcoming me. I have been lurking for a long time, just never had a reason to post. I am in Northern Virginia (Arlington), but I saw this thread and since I am a Cabelas catalog shopper, I had to join in the email campaign.

Apparently, a problem comes up that Cabelas has never dealt with and in the space os a couple of days, makes a corporate decision to honor open or concealed carry according to State law.

Too bad other companies can't be as forthright as Cabelas. They not only have my thanks, but they will get more of my money!:celebrate

There was a sign at the Mitchell, South Dakota, Cabelas when I was there on 6/23/07. I don't recall the exact verbage, but it said to check firearms at the "courtesy counter". It was somewhat vague insofar as one might reasonably interpret it to mean literally ALL firearms... or, possibly onlyfirearms coming in for a return, or gunsmithing, etc.

I think I may have posted on here some time ago that the Gander Mountain in Madison, WI had a sign stating "firearms must be checked expect by permit holders." I couldn't resist asking if that meant I could wear my gun in there since I have multiple concealed weapons permits... none of which are valid in Wisconsin! They just looked confused and didn't even know there was such a notice on the door. :?

I am definitely less than enthusiastic about any place that sells firearms but wishes to restrict them on the premises....

If you buy a gun at Dick's here... they escort you to the door then hand you the gun. Apparently they have been told by the "mall" that the "mall" doesn't want people walking through the mall with guns. Like most people would recognize that long box for what it is!

Cabelas is good people, never been questioned when open carying in a store & several times when trying on clothes my CCW was exposed and they never blinked an eye.

The Woolrich elite line of clothes is much better than 5.11 for my money. http://www.backyardoutfitter.com/

OCed into Cabela's today and was asked to check my gun in at the front counter and told that I would not be allowed to OC. I had a copy of the e-mail from Cabela's national with me which i showed to the manager and explained them that the policy of Cabela's is now to follow state regulatioins. It took about 25 mins for the managers to confirm this during which time I talked to two employees about my open carrying and about guns in general. both were supportive of my open carrying with one going so far as to inquire about Opencarry.org and writing the URL down so he could visit it.

After about 25 mins, the general manager and the floor manager came back, appologized for the inconveniance and explained that corporate had not let them know about the change in policy up to that point. The manager then handed me his business card, told me to feel free to OC in the store and said to contact him if I had any other probblems.

I was not hassled for the rest of my visit in the store during which i looked at several guns and ammunition types and purchased a knife sharpener. The only comment that was made was at the end by the checkout clerk who remarked that she was surprised that they didn't make me check my gun and then asked why I was carrying. i explained that I carry for self defense and to show a positive view of guns in a social setting. after hearing my reasoning, she was supportive and very positive. Over all a good educational experience for Cabela's and I seriously doubt that anyone OCing there in Boise will have any more probblems.
