Thought you guys might want to see the letter that I received about this issue. Kind of repeating what has already been said but here it is anyway:

In the past, we have been cautious about open carry in a retail environment due to accidental discharges, etc. However, this is not our current policy. We do allow open carry in accordance with state and federal laws. That was a recent update to accommodate our outdoor clientele and that information was not properly communicated in a timely fashion. I will take full responsibility for this issue. I can assure you we did not intentionally want to infringe upon anyone’s rights. Please accept my apology and we hope to see you back in the store. Thank you.

Sorry, it was an email, not a letter. The email that I sent them is on the first page but I'll consolidate everything here for convenience.
I sent the following:

I have recently been informed of an individual thatwas asked to leave your Boise, Idaho store for legally carrying his firearm in accordance with both state and federal firearm laws. I find it hard to believe that Cabela's would willfully discriminate against the very customers that they depend on. I have five friends, all who were planning on placing orders for next years hunting equipment with you, who have put their orders on hold until this is matter is corrected. We will not do business with a company that claims to value their outdoor customers and yet is against their customers exercising their rights to legally bear arms. If there has been an error, I would appreciate it if you would correct your manager’s actions and inform me of this. I will be sharing your response with my friends.

It took them about three weeks to respond but this is the letter that they sent me in its entirety:

This is so AWESOME.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would decline all the Hunters and other clientel to NOT be able to carry in a "GUN ENVIROMENT" wether OC or CC

Since when did most gun restrictions make any sense? Couldn't you argue that this entire country is a "gun environment"? Maybe we should send similar letters to Congress threatening to stop doing business (paying taxes) with them unless they stop discriminating against their clientele.

Because of the wording of the signs I've seen on Sportsmans Warehouse entrances, I just sent the following via their website:

Dear Sir or Madam:

What is your corporate policy with respect to your customers who may be carrying a handgun either openly or concealed in accordance with the laws of their state?

There is a sign on both of your Twin Falls, ID. and your Boise, ID. stores that can be construed to limit the personal carry of firearms into the store proper.

It will be interesting to see their response.

Allen,

Good idea to get it in writing, but I've already cleared up the issue with Sportsman's. I was told to leave there a couple months back for OC, and through a wonderfully funny maze of he said she said, and a few assumptions on Sportsman's part, we ended up with their regional manager on the phone for about 45 minutes... the first 30 of which were profuse apologies, and saying that their signs are only intended to limit loaded firearms that are going to be worked on (gunsmithing)... and the rest of it was about how to word it and train employees. Overall, the guy was cool, we'd known him before when he worked at the Boise location, and he was VERY supportive of both OC and CC... their corporate policy is to follow state law, with the exception of their Seattle store, where OC is NOT allowed, but CC is. He said this was an economic decision, since a HUGE percentage of customers up there are hippie types and complain if they see a MERE citizen carrying a firearm (did they ever consider that in going to a hunting type store they just might see guns!????). Other than that, he was in process (as he was on the phone with us) of drafting up wording for the new signs at the newer store to make clear the distinction between OC and carrying a firearm in for gunsmithing... my bro suggested that their Phoenix store clearly conveyed the intent. Long post, but should help you know how they're thinking.

It kinda helps, but...

Last winter, Jan. 2007, I was in the Twin Falls store (I had received a gift cert for xmas) when some inattentive salesman bumped into me on one of the reloading aisles. Long story short: He couldn't help but notice the rather hard object concealed benaeth my wind breaker. He summoned the manager and I was escorted out of the store and told to disram. The signs were plain, I should have checked my gun at the service desk, was what the manager told me.

I just figured if they were that picky about CC, how would they be about OC?

This Cabelas thread got me to thinking, so I took the opportunity to get a difinitive statement from their corporate HQ.

... Oh, I haven't been back to that store since.

Went to Cabela's today for lunch. First visit in about two weeks.

Previously there was a sign very prominent on the front doors (the opening ones) that said all guns needed to be checked at customer service.

Today's trip I noticed that the sign had been moved to the non-opening glass of the front door (not as prominent) and now reads something like guns to be sold or repaired need to be checked at customer service, this does not apply to concealed carry permit holders.

While not exact wording I didn't see a particular clause for open carry, but seemed that it was only guns that were going to be staying at Cabela's needed to be checked in.

Oh yea and nice to see more people in the Idaho forum then there was a few months ago last I came here to lurk :)

Just recieved an email from the manager of the Boise Idaho Cabela's. Here it is, in it's entirety. If any of you want a copy of the email forwarded to you with all the urls, timestamps etc, I'll be happy to forward it to you, just PM me with your email addy.

Micah,

My name is Byron Wimmer and I am the General Manager of Cabela’s here in Boise. Thank you for your recent comment to our corporate office. As for our current open carry policy, yes we do support all state and federal laws. You are allowed to open carry in our store. The only time you are asked to check your firearm as you enter the store is if you are looking to sale or trade or if you are having your firearm worked on. So, if you run into any issues that do not support this legal right, please do not hesitate to call me. Thank you again for supporting Cabela’s and we look forward to seeing you in the store.

Respectfully,
Byron Wimmer
