As for the crossdraw, it is a very good carry option, so long as you practice rolling your wrist (so as to avoid sweeping the muzzle across all sorts of targets). You may not be able to use crossdraw at the range, though.
It should not open you up for retention problems. After all, if someone wants to snatch it, they'll have to come from the front or reach across your body.
There's a very good chance you'll end up with a holster or two that end up gathering dust, but try a few and you'll probably find one that will feel right.
