This happened two buildings down from my grad student office at 9:30am today, here on the CU Boulder campus. Unfortunately, I was not on campus until my office hours at 1pm today and heard about it then... I'm kicking myself that I didn't go earlier and might have been able to intervene.

CU Boulder still is pushing to be a "gun free zone"; this is just another example of how random violence can be in the modern world. Preparedness is all we have.

Well, now they'll probably want to ban knives too.

A gun-free zone should be renamed to "You are on your own in this zone!" because that is really what it means. A lot of people actually believe that no guns in an area generally makes people safer. People being prepared, aware of their surroundings and looking after other people keeps people safe. That and a Glock, FS92, Kimber or other firearm of your choice. If you don't believe this, ask someone in D.C., NY or Chicago. The whole of D.C., for the most part, is a gun-free zone. Except for the bad guys. I would include Mayor Bloomberg as their representative.

Don't kick yourself too hard. It's highly unlikely you would be in the same place and time where the attack took place.

I see from the story that the wacko attacker was subdued by an LEO with a Taser!

Apparently, no need for a gun on this one. I gotta think the LEO did a great job in using only sufficient force required to stop the threat and apprehend the knife guy.

I hope that kid from Illinois is alright...

    Student Stabbed On CU Campus
Suspect Was Accused In 2001 Stabbing

    Mike Hooker
    Reporting

(AP/CBS4) BOULDER, Colo. A man wielding a knife stabbed a student on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus Monday morning.

A witness told CBS4 that a man rushed onto the terrace in front of the student center with a knife started screaming about the end of the world. Other witnesses also said the man claimed to have material for making bombs in his Jeep.

Police said the suspect, Kenton Drew Astin, 39, then pulled a knife and stabbed a student, freshman Michael George Knorps.

"I understand he was grabbed from behind," CU spokesman Branson Hilliard said. "The person attempted to cut his throat."

Knorps just happened to be exiting the student center in the area of Euclid and Broadway in Boulder.

A Boulder County Sheriff's officer was driving by and saw the commotion. He got out of his car and approached the suspect. When he got near him, witnesses say the suspect stabbed himself in the stomach, which still didn't subdue him. The officer then used a stun gun to take him down....
