Why has this ancient story been making its rounds on firearms forums? Is there some sort of underground ZOMG COP STORY ring or something?

It was posted on Digg.com today, and has been spreading like wildfire. It's not new, but that doesn't make it any less tragic.

Admittedly I felt a little silly by posting this as new news after realizing it was a few years old. But then I began to think; so what?

Why do we as a society tend to have such a short memory about atrocities? Why is it that if it's more than a few days or weeks old, it no longer seems to matter?
