Aside from Mr. Jacksons comments ( who is up for reelection next year, and I doubt he will be voted in ), most of the complaints with the NRA pertain to "the all or nothing attitude" and begging for money. All or nothing gets you a lot more ofNOTHING than it does ALL. Are you people under the impression that the NRA can walk into Congress,Make demands or threaten to walk out !I would think most of us here have been around long enough to know what kinda BS it takes to get something through Congress.

Do you have CC in your state? Who helped you with that? Do you have to worry about getting sued by the family of some lowlife that you shot after he broke into your house and threatened your wife and daughter? NO, who helped you with that? Did the Governor of your state sign a bill saying that you would never be disarmed after a state of emergency is declared due to some type of disaster? Yes,Who helped you with that. Can you take your new gun home after a 20 minute background check or do you have to wait 5 to 7 days? Who helped you with that? All or nothing would still have you waiting a week! The list goes on and on and on, but I think I made my point.

As far as asking for money is concerned, you pay annual membership dues of $35, for that you receive a monthly publication, insurance to help you or your familyout if you get killed or injuredwhen your hunting or at a shooting event,$1,000 in coverage to help replace or repair a lost, damaged or stolen firearm, oh,, and don't forget the hat. Thats a pretty good box of toys for $35.So if you don't think your going to get some letters asking for $50 to help pay for that stuffI listed in the previous paragraph, your pretty damn naive! If you don't want them to send you that stuff, pick up the phone, call them and tell them to stop sending it to you. Or you could just piss and moan and continue to enjoy your freedoms and rights that the NRA helps protect.

I posted this earlier on another thread

Sure, the NRA does not do everything to protect gun rights that I would like them to do. But let's be honest, without the NRA, does anyone actually believe that it would be easier to get more of our gun rights back?

...and don't forget the hat.
What!? I never got a hat!

To rebutt some of the other comments: I don't expect an all or nothing stance but, having said that, giving up any of my 2A freedoms doesn't sit well with me. It's hard for me to say an organization has done a "very good job" when I need to have a background check to buy a gun, need to have a permit to carry a gun, can't have an automatic weapon, can't have a silencer, can't even carry a gun in many metropolitan areas, etc. While I agree that the NRA has done a lot to protect our rights, that doesn't mean I can't wish for more.

I also will agree with the people who say they ask for money far too often. I get a mailer from the NRA at least once a month. Now, I know they need money to fight the good fight, but I can't help but feel I'm being constantly badgered. I would much prefer they raise the price of membership and then send out letters, say, twice a year, asking for a contribution. I know for a fact that a lot of former NRA members left the organization precisely for this reason. I've spoken to numerous people who, when I told them they should join the NRA to help preserve their 2A rights, have said "Nah. I was a member a long time ago, but got sick of all the letters asking for money". Not only does this drive people away, but I think it lessens the impact when you do hear from them. Instead of thinking "Something from the NRA? Wonder what congress is trying to pull now?" people think "Great. Another letter from the NRA asking for money". I think they could do a lot better in this regard.

So, while I like the NRA and think they do a good job, I think they could do better. One of the other threads about the NRA mentioned how low membership is. Well, perhaps if they addressed some of the reasons that people leave the group, they could grow the membership. Then, after they grow the membership, they could have a bigger voice and more power to affect policy.

But, who am I to say? I'm just a lowly gun owner who loves the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I just re-signed for two more years...still no hat.

Is this a true statement in Virginia 1st Freedom?
If it wasn't true, I wouldn't have said it, It's called " The Castle Doctrine"

cue-ball,
Call (703) 267-3700, that's membership at NRA Headquarters, let them know that you need a hat. Works for me.
I agree with you that a lot of our rights are getting stepped on, I don't like it any more than you do, but what confueses me is this,

The NRA has about 4 million members out of 80 million gun owners.76 million gun owners complain that the NRA wont play hardball with Congress. Therefor they refuse to be members. It seems that 4 million voters dosn't carry enough weight to press our Legislators into voting in favor of our Constitutional Rights,I'll bet 12 or 16 million members would make a hell of impact. Do you disagree?

In short, you ( not you personally ) complain because they don't carry enough weight, so i'm not going to join and give them more weight. Explain that to me in a way that makes sence. Seems counterproductive to me.

While your on the phone about your hat, tell them to put you on the " NO PROMOTE " list. That will cut down on your mail. That works for me too:lol:

1st Freedom - Per your own citation: "Aside from Florida, Castle Doctrine is now the law in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Dakota."

Thus your statement is NOT true in Virginia.

In fact, in Virginia, [font="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"][size="-2"]the bill also providing that a person who uses justifiable force against an intruder be immune from civil liability for injuries or death of the other person was defeated in the Courts of Justice 9-6.

I'm not arguing for or against the NRA, just want to make sure that the facts presented are true as not to mislead anyone reading these threads.

Thisis from your citation, 1stfreedom:

As I suspected, Virginia is not on that list. If this is wrong, please cite the new Virginia code.

I never got a hat! My wife is also PO'ed that they stopped making the Women's Outlook mag and she already told them if they want her to renew to bring it back. I have given a considerable amount every year and still I am disappointed in their lackluster support over all. No castle doctrine in Va. but of course there wasn't much NRA push for that. Several gun dealers getting pushed around by ATF JBT's and/or rotten politicians (Bloomy) …where is the NRA's help. I guess they don't realize that the dealer is a requirement to keep the 2A well supplied; but the NRA appears to turn a blind eye to them. All I can say is I am glad I didn't get a lifetime membership and my current one expires next month. The magazines.....they would be OK if the info wasn't 2 months behind.

BUT! BUT! The government lets you touch guns! And without the NRA, you would never get to touch guns! And, if you gave the NRA more money, then they would let you have more rights! So the reason you're unhappy with the amount of rights you're allowed to have is because you haven't given the NRA enough money yet, and you haven't recruited enough members!

 Er, sorry. I had to engage in a shameless mockery of other posters... If I didn't I would have snapped. :?

BayBoy and Tom,

Yes they do a "good" job...........but they could do oh so much more!!!!!!

But American gunowners by and large aren't involved, aren't active, aren't understanding of the issues, aren't understanding of the opposition, and aren't going to join and provide moral and financial support of any kind. That's at the federal AND state levels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wake up America before it's to late!

It's not just gun owners who are asleep at the wheel. The large majority of Americans are completely apathetic about almost every issue facing society today. I bet that less than 1 in 10 people can name five presidential candidates, name any of their local representatives, or tell you what any of the first 10 amendments to our Constitution say.

Most people just don't give a damn. As long as they have their beer and cable TV, they're content to sit on the couch and vegetate.

Gee, when I read this, I had to look to see if it was one of MY posts !!!! Here, let me add to it. It should read "Amerikans," not "Americans." As for the 1 in 10 ratio, take heart. That's about the same ratio of citizens who participated in the 1st American revolution. The 2nd shouldn't be much longer in coming. Along with the beer and cable TV, you forgot to include cigarettes, lottery tickets and going to the casino.

God save what's left of the Republic

Well said. I often watch NRAnews.com & the folks on the street that they find to interview astound me. Folks that say they're fine with the DC handgun ban & that the ban means less guns which equals greater safety. He then asks them if they are against the second amendment. 99% of the time they say "what is the 2nd amendment? Is that for free speech or something?"

I can't believe it. So many blind sheep falling for the lies in the media.

Pretty straightforward "endorsement." ;)

That's why I can't understand why anyone would possibly vote Strongly Disagree in this poll. I wonder who those two are? Huffman? .... Kelly J??? Hard to tell. ;)

One thing is for sure: All gun owners and carriers need the NRA to advance their interests and protect their rights. Doesn't matter if they are members or not. The NRA is gonna advance and protectanyway. Hmm, that would be a good motto for the NRA: We advance and protect.
