Some friends and I have been planning on hiking up in the mountains of Colorado for a while, so as our schedules came together we went west from Boulder about 30 miles into Eldorado Canyon, not terribly far from the Nederland area when you start getting into some of the tall mountains beyond the foothills. For those of you who wouldn't have heard local news, Nederland/Boulder has been the scene of some wild animal fun recently: four bears in Boulder in the past week (including one which had to be put down) and three mountain lion attacks up near Nederland, with several horses being killed in the process. So while I'm usually content with carrying some sort of pistol for protection in the woods (Colt SAA with hot loaded JHP 45LC), this time I loaded my Remington 870 Police model up with a mix of buckshot and slugs, and struck out into the wilderness.

The hike up was devoid of another soul, but on the way down, our group came across some tourists from Europe who were doing some manner of rocky mountain hiking tour. The man in the lead had a British accent and said, "wow, is that thing real?" When I said yes, he turned excitedly to his group and said, "remember, don't anger the Americans in their natural habitat!" At the end of their group was a couple from France, who asked me why I had a gun out in the woods. I told them (in French to get my point across better) that there had been lots of bear and mountain lion problems recently, so I thought it would be best to be ready in case something happened. They became very concerned, telling others in the group that there were dangerous animals before turning to me and asking if I would mind coming up with them to make sure they were safe  I apologized and said no, that I had already been up, and that it was safe as I could tell. But surely, they got a dose of American hiking in the place of European hiking!

After that, we drove back down to Nederland to get some lunch. I suggested a local bar with good "average" food, but I was overruled and we went to Kathmandu, a Nepalese restaurant instead. I left the shotgun in the car, of course, but kept my Colt and my KBAR on my belt. The food was good, but halfway through lunch a 45-50 year old woman came over and knelt down next to me, and said "You know, you walking in here with... a gun strapped to your hip, it's insane. I feared for my life. You shouldn't be allowed to walk around like that." Unfortunately, I can't capture her condescending "I'm going to give you my important opinion and couldn't care less about you" tone of voice. As I noticed her BMW keychain and her "I(heart)CA" tote, I was in no mood to put up with west-coast criticism and told her that if she was terrified of people being armed in Colorado, she should get to her car and drive back to California as fast as possible, for her own safety! Normally I'd be more polite and at least try to come off as a pillar of the gun-owning community, but there was none of that in light of her tone after a 10-mile hike.

So, the moral of the story is that in mountain lion country, Brits and the French are better allies than Californians against the wilds ;) And the gratuitous gun porn picture of the afternoon...

Don't sweat it. You did fine :) People like that typically need shut down. They will never be on our side so why kiss their ass? Of course others (few) here will disagree as they seem to be obsessed with what the Brady Bunch are thinking about every thread on here :)

Sounds like a good day overall despite the condescending CA trash giving you a talking to. Hey, could have been worse! An LEO with poor judgement could have taken it upon himself to point his gun at you for his misconception of what acceptable behavior is :what:

Silly question, how did you carry the shotgun while hiking? I don't see a sling, did you have it in your pack??

Nice write up, we can never find time to stay and play when in the Nederland area. Need to plan an entire day of it one of these days! Personally I can't stand the liberal loud mouths who know guns are evil and should be melted down, good on ya how ya talked to the Kalif transplant & told her to go home :cool:

This is my favorite place to eat in the area, they have some superb food!!! We did not know there was a Nepalese restaurant in town. Where is it, we might just have to swing in there the next time in town.

I was CCWing the Sig 239 when eating at the Black Forest & took off my cover shirt & nobody said a thing. Course I made a loud THUNK when sitting down as te butt of the pistol hit the wooden bench.

ralphb72 - I don't have a sling attachment on the folding stock, so I cut out the bottom of the water bottle holder on the side of that backpack and use it as a sheath for the shotgun; the stock on the side of the receiver is the perfect catch to hold it in place, with the tip of the barrel no further down than my mid-thigh. On the way down the mountain, it started raining for a while, so I put it in the pack with a shirt covering the exposed grip... Colorado's laws exempt people who are "hunting, fishing, engaged in lawful target practice, or otherwise engaged in outdoor activities where the carrying of weapons is a common practice and the weapon carried is being used exclusively for that activity" from concealed weapons laws, so as long as we were hiking and worried about wild animal attacks, we're good with that.

Mjolnir - I'm glad you can back up the good things I've heard about the Black Forest! When we were driving by, I pointed it out to my fiancée as a place we should go up and try out next time we were in the mood to head up into the mountains, and the fact that the people who run it aren't Californified gun-haters is a great selling point! Methinks we might have the basis of the first front-range OC dinner?

Denwego, my wife is part German, her Grandmother is from Germany & the wife said the food was superb, allmost as good as her Grandmother made. It's actually the best German food I've had since spending time in Germany & was totally unexpected.

Going to look for the Nepalese restaurant next time we are in town.

Hello Denwego and everyone from CO,

I have been reading everyone's stories and I can't believe there is a place on the internet where people from my neighborhood go to talk about OC. I wish there were more stories to read - I have read them all twice and honestly had no idea that it was legal to OC. I don't think I've ever noticed someone OC that didn't look like LE.

Unfortunately I have no stories except for my own introduction. I am new to guns, I've fired a couple as a kid but until recently I have not really given it much thought. My brother in law showed me his Kimber Custom this summer and that started the ball rolling for me. First, I thought I wanted a 1911 and then I started researching Glocks and that lead me to my final decision to buy a Steyr M9-A1 which I think is kind of a designer Glock with a rock bottom price ($350 new.) My plan is to take the personal protection class at BRC and then go for my CCL. I honestly don't think I have the stones to OC to places other than the back country but I am new to this so who knows how that will change.

Sorry for the tangent and yes I do have a question related to this thread. Denwego, is it true that I can take a CCW fishing w/o my CCL? Do you have a link to any official documents that I can print off and bring with me when I go fishing?

Hopefully I will have more to contribute to this forum someday but for now I may just have a bunch of newbie questions

Matt

...LEO229 isn't from CO, though, so I don't think he had much to worry about.

OOOOHH SNAP! I wouldn't worry much about LEO 229, it is UtahCop that worries me. :uhoh:
UtahCop is the one who wants to point his weapon at you for carrying.

LOL. Nice job.

I agree with my comrade from North of the river. My apologies for the nonsense emenating from my fellow Brit, please excuse the poor benighted wanker, he has obviously not been around guns much. Same as most of the Brits. He was just trying to be funny, at least he did not freak out like the old biddy from Kalifornia did, and I think you told her her fortune in a proper manner. Well done, Sir!

"The man in the lead had a British accent and said, "wow, is that thing real?"

No, I just carry it to train my arm muscle.

It always amuses me when Lalala-land-living, Ivory-Tower-sitting Europeans who perceive themselves to beintellectually superior drop to their knees when the practical approach and common sense of the average American is needed.

(Some woman from California said)"You know, you walking in here with... a gun strapped to your hip, it's insane. I feared for my life. You shouldn't be allowed to walk around like that."

These are the people who praise(d) the Soviet Union where you had needed governmental approval for every part of life. By the way, is it compulsary to come to Colorado? As far as I know it is not.

That California lady was SO scared that she walked right up to you and talked to you while you were carrying a gun and a knife. Yeah, I TOTALLY believe she was scared. (sarcasm) The truth is that she was probably part of the anti gun crowd, and wanted to take the opportunity to try to spread her bullcrap.

Older post, but great story! I would have suggested to the dumb ass from the People's Democratic Republik of Kalifornia two things: if you don't like our state, don't let the door hit you in the ass as you run back to your "social paradise"; and if you really are opposed to citizens having the right to defend themselves, why don't you move to North Korea? No citizens there, just subjects. As to the Brits and the French you met: the Brits may make fun of us Yankees, but they have stood shoulder to shoulder with us where it counts: on the battlefield. Of course, can't say the same about the cheese eating surrender monkies from La Paris...:monkey
