does this mean that firearms can be carried only in cars with a permit or that you need a permit to carry openly in cars?

Also, it is legal to open carry or conceal carry on your own property without a permit like in VA, correct?

In TN you need a permit to carry a handgun in your car open or concealed unless it is unloaded and the gun and ammo are stored separately.39-17-1308(a)(1)

You can carry open or concealed at your house, at your place ofbusiness or on your premises without a permit. 39-17-1308(a)(3)(A)-(C)
