As you may have noticed, I have placed a small Google Adsense banner on the top of the forum.

This is a way for Mike and I to attempt to recoup some of the monthly expenses that we incur with the site.

I hope it does not in any way detract from the purpose of the site or of your enjoyment thereof.

If anyone has any comments about this, please PM me and I will be glad to address them.

PS. I know that Google has been anti-gun in the past where their advertising programs are concerned. We will see how it goes. They did approve the site; so .... we will see how it goes.

I don't know why it took me the better part of 9 months to ask this, but does the amount of revenue for the site depend on the number of clicks on the ads? Or just the existence of the ads?

As far as Google Adsense, at least on my sites, and I'm sure it's the same everywhere, pay-per-click and impression based ads are displayed randomly by default. This means that some are paid per click, and some are paid per view.

That being said, I'd advise against clicking on too many ads, or on any ads you're not actually interested in. Google has been known to shut down adsense accounts for "fraudulent clicks" when it looks like someone (the site's owner/administrator or otherwise) is clicking ads for no other purpose than to generate revenue for the site.

It's your site, and how you maintain it (with google adsense or not) is your business. However, you might like to know that Google isn't very firearm friendly.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=26819

An excerpt from the news article above is italicized below. Things may have changed over at google since 2002, but I can't find anything more current than this.
David Krane, a spokesman for Google, said the website's ad policy "clearly states" that the company refuses ads from firearms dealers, as well as ads for liquor, tobacco and a few other products.
When questioned specifically about pornography sites, though, Krane said, "We actually do accept those ads."

Update:

I just found an update as of September 19, 2008 here is what a google employee says about firearms and AdSense in this thread:

Hi Texas1911,

While AdSense and AdWords have different policies, in this case the
policies are in line.

AdSense Program Policies forbid placing ad code on sites that include
"Sales or promotion of weapons or ammunition (e.g., firearms, fighting
knives, stun guns)."

AdWords Advertising Policies state that "Advertising is not permitted
for the promotion of certain weapons, such as firearms, firearm
components, ammunition, balisongs (switchblades), butterfly knives,
and brass knuckles."

You can find the AdSense Program Policies here:
https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=48182&sou...
and the AdWords policy on weapons here:
https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=guidelines.cs&t....
