In the VCDL Update I received tonight through e-mail, section 8. "More $ at VT: does it buy more security?"

The point is brought up that most profs. require their students to turn off their cell phones while in class, which would mean students would not be able to receive Mason Alert messages.

Did GMU even consider this when spending $$$ for the 'feel good solution' Mason Alert system?

At the start of the semester I had one prof at GMU ask the class to turn their phones to vibrate. She said that she couldn't ask people to turn their phones off because of the new alert system. I'm not sure if GMU has instructed their professors to do this, or if she one of the few professors with some situational awareness. If I had to guess, I'd say it was the latter!

Yeah I'd have to say it was the latter as well! Of my profs., some have only said to turn them off, while other ones haven't said anything.

I keep mine on "vibrate only" during class regardless.
