Do you get like a card or anything when you join? I know when you are a member of NRA you get a card. Not that this is a big deal but just more of a way to have something so if someone asks what is that, you can let them know what VCDL is about.

You will get a VCDL membership card and a newletter from time to time. Welcome to our organization that fights to preserve and improve our Virginia gun rights.

It can take some time to get the membership packet, unfortunately VCDL is an all volunteer organization and not everything can get done as we would all like, but they haven't forgotten you.

Not to disuade people from joining; because I understand and agree with the efforts but the one thing that irks me about both the NRA and VCDL is when they catagorize all anti's as liberals.

Somehow joining an organization that is ok with using sterotypical language just doesn't appeal to me.

But, I do look long and hard on the VCDL survey's and use that as a basis for my voting.

VCDL's alerts do not, or at least should not, categorize anti-gunners as liberals. From VA-ALERT: VCDL UPDATE 11/20/2007:

**************************************************
18. Reminder: Right to self-protection crosses party lines
**************************************************

Member Eric Smith sent this thoughtful discussion of how the issue of
self protection crosses party lines. I urge all of us to be mindful
of this. I do, from time to time, mention this issue in an update or
alert. We have members who are Democrat, very liberal Democrats, who
believe strongly in our right to keep and bear arms. We don't want
to alienate any of our fellow gun owners and activists.

Heck, I have met many "conservative" Republicans who don't like the
Second Amendment.

That is why it is important to use the term "anti-gunner" to describe
the opposition.

I've noticed that often times in LTE's, statements, conversations,
etc. that 2nd Amendment defenders tend to use phrases like
"Bleeding-heart" "Left-wing" or even just "Liberal" with enough oomph
behind it to sound like a 4 letter word.

I understand those feelings and have said those things myself.

However, if we're going to be debating the issue publicly, I can say
from personal experience, that if you aren't solidly republican,
those phrases tend to make you less inclined to listen to the rest of
the debate, or even the issue at hand.

Once simple slurs come out, a lot of non-right wing people, who are
otherwise enamored with their 2nd amendment rights, get the "Gun Nut"
impression. I know we aren't "Gun Nuts" holed up waiting for the FBI,
and so do you, but to a lot of less involved people, that's how it
comes across.

I think, in an effort to defeat those who would take away our rights,
we should follow the tradition of VCDL's membership, in being polite,
civil, and levelheaded in our conversations/debates/public forums.
Let the other side keep up the hail of insults and derogatory terms.
This includes not resorting to "Liberal" slinging. Many of our
supporters are otherwise "Liberal" and may either not feel welcome,
or like they're the odd one out.

We need all the over 21 non-felon bodies we can get. No sense in
accidentally alienating any of them, especially if they do agree with
us and would otherwise join. [PVC: No need for me to say it, as Eric
has said it quite well.]

Abno, I sign up a couple of people every year and pay the first years dues for them. I almost always meet them at the next gunshow and just give them the money for the dues. I also give them a VCDL patch so they have a membership something...until their card comes. I have my two for this year and will sign one up at the next show. The other one wouldn't take a paid membership and just did his own.

As far as VCDL painting everyone as a Liberal....I haven't noticed it. They have done a few things over the years that I thought were improper........IN EVERY CASE, I WAS WRONG AND WHAT THEY DID OR SAID WAS exactly RIGHT.

Philip Van Cleave has been fighting for our rights for a while now. He's supported by very capable Board members and a quite a few Executive Members.

They are very effective.

Yup, seen that before. I'll keep an eye out and if it looks like things are different and persons claiming to be affiliated with VCDL are not referring to all antis- as liberals then I'll join up.

Sides, a VCDL membership card would be a great compliment to my ACLU membership card.

Welcome to the club Diesel! I joined right after I read about the Tony's 7 incident, which has prompted me to become more aware of and involved in 2A support and issues.

So, gotta give the Manassas PD that harassed the 7 some credit, they've indirectly helped the fight for 2A rights and awareness... at least as far as I'm concerned.
