I just saw that the City of Seattle (both the mayor and Chief of police are very anti-gun), and the Harborview Medical Center (also very anti-gun) is hosting a meeting next week.

They claim it's a meeting about stopping the 'rash of gun violence' that Seattle has been experiencing. But I'm sure the only 'solution' they will really focus on is gun control.

I can just imagine that they will discuss the gun show "loop-hole", banning private sales, waiting periods, limiting number of gun purchases per month, etc.

The meeting is funded by the Joyce Foundation, which is itself very... anti-gun (surprise, surprise).

I can find no date/location posted on the Seattle or Haborview websites.

If we can get a date/location, it might begood if some pro-gun people can make an appearance to provide somereal statistics, rational arguments, and some general common sense.

Seattle gun summit focuses on preventing violent crime
Associated Press

Last updated: Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 09:32:22 am
Harborview Medical Center are hosting a summit on gun crime prevention next week. They hope to find ways to reduce violent crimes and stop criminals from getting guns.

Monday's summit is expected to draw 150 people, including police, prosecutors, church leaders and school officials.

They'll hear from experts who have seen success in cutting gun violence elsewhere. Authorities say the city of Seattle has seen a resurgence in gang-related violence and recently had several shootings downtown. People are beginning to worry that Seattle's relatively low rate of violent crime is in jeopardy.

The Joyce Foundation, a Chicago-based non-profit that advocates for more restrictive gun-control laws provided grant money to pay for the conference."

Can I scream? Please? Pretty please?

Lesse, gangstas bustin' a cap on gangstas yo. Yeah. It's the guns. Fo' real. How about addressing the poverty, social issues and cultural reasons for the resurgance in gang activity? Hmmm? Oh yeah, it's the guns fault.

Mr. Ruger P89 and myself feel pretty safe walking around Seattle. I like Mr. RugerP89. He is my special friend. Aaawww 9mm semi automatic. How cute... Just wook at dose widdle 147 grain hollowpoints. Isn't that special?

Can I scream again? How about now? Now I remember why I moved out of Seattle in the first place.

I remember reading several articles (in reputable publications) that in part blamed the current increase in gang violence to the fact that NOW gang members are being released from prison who were locked up 10-15 years ago -- in order to stop gang violence back then.

We had worse gang problems 'back then.' We solved it by locking people up. Now they are getting out and we are surprised that they weren't reformed. Kooky ;)

We also have new gangs, i.e. MS13, which have spread far and wide during the last 10 years. I can now see their tags in the Seattle area. These guys are the 'worst of the worst' -- and it is i part an immigration problem not a gun problem.

And we have 'new drugs' like meth. Meth has become an epidemic, and drives many other gang related crimes. The growth in crimes and gang violence can be partially attibuted to the growth in meths popularity imho.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003275730_gangs26m.html

"Sano said there's another phenomenon at play: The return of so-called O.G.s, or Original Gangsters, to their neighborhoods after serving 10- or 20-year prison sentences.

But they're returning to a changed landscape, where younger gang members, many of them representing a family's second or third generation in a particular gang, are now clashing with them over control of drug-selling turf."

Re: this anti-'gang violence'meeting...

You can be dang sure that most of the solutions they propose will be anti-gun and will negatively affect law abiding citizens. They don't want to address the real issues: poverty, the failed WoD, permissive 'rap/gangster' culture, failed public education, etc.

Nope, way easier for the politicos to 'blame the evil guns' and pass laws against them. That makes the soccer moms swoon in happiness, and earns them easy votes -- even as things just keep getting worse.

Special little club eh? I'll bet they invite the media, and put as much spin out as they can. Personally I think that any Seattle government official has no business speaking out against something that is clearly protected in the State Constitution.

I don't think people would tolerate them speaking out on limiting free speech, or permitting unwarranted searches of homes, why tolerate this BS?

This pro-gun-control symposium will be held next Monday. So far, it's by invitation only (and no, there is not a single pro-2A person invited.) Haven't been able to find a time though. It will be held at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center.

Well, if that is true, I gotta ask why isn't there even one pro-2A advocate? That's very foolish to exclude ALL comments or concerns from a person or group that supports 2A.

Ahh, the usual adversarial positioning/strategizing no doubt..... </shakes head>

Speaking of adversarial....I hope no one gets the notion to go over there in an OCgroup to barge in on their meeting.

That would be a train wreck for sure.

Actually someone from the 2AF was invited to this via someone who was on the "invite list". The mayor found out who it was and quickly cancelled that invite. Just like all other anti-american, anti-2A folks, facts can NOT get in the way of feelings.

Actually it's the typical liberal mindset: "YOU must be inclusive and full off acceptance, but WE can be exclusive and judgemental."

I've seen that again and again, most often on college campuses.

The big three in the media are Domestic violence, Gang violence and Gun violence. While I find the first two terms useful because they differentiate those types apart from your everyday robbery, assault, drunken brawl etc types of violent acts. But it is the third term that I find extremely offensive. The very term "Gun Violence" is misleading, prejudicial and designed to create an unfavorable view of firearms.

Has anyone else noticed that you never hear of any other sort of device descriptive violence? There is no "knife violence" reported on the evening news. No "blunt object violence"mentioned on harpO. No "motor vehicle violence" mentioned in the newspapers. The only inanimate object given it's very own category of violence is the gun.

Violent acts should be classified according to the people involved (gangs, criminals, domestic partners, family members etc) or by the surrounding circumstances (drug use, robbery, sexual assault, lover's quarrel, etc). But not by the hardware used to inflict the pain. That's pure folly. It clearly underscores the agenda being surreptitiously forced upon us by those who wish to control us.

+1...you hit it on the head BluesBear
Maybe all the pro 2A people/orgs should start ranting about the "PC" of the term "gun violence"......surely if they can make "Santa" say hahaha in place of hohoho (because it may offend women), we should be able to bitch too.

Somewhere on this board is a long well thought out article from an African-American police officer. In it he correctly points out that gun control comes from Racism and is a form of the "blue laws".

So whyare Seattles' PC lovin socialist scum politiciansallowed to have a big pro-racism conference in the middle of town? All the coverage mentions the "gang" problem. Gang members are what?, 1 in 1000 minority citizens in the city? Less then that?

There goal is to make it difficult for the poor and minorities to excercise thier civil and human right to self defense based on the very few action of a criminal element rather then focus on the crime.

Is there a way we can get the message out during this conference tolet people know where this type of law comes from?

Also, I can't find the stats in my old email but I know studies have shown that Doctors, through incompetence and negligence KILL about 3 times as many people every year asguns do. Somebody have the time to look for that study? I mentionit because this conference is being supported by Harborview, continung thier long history a wasting large amount of tax dollars on"gun control" by claiming itis a medical issue.

From "GunFacts".... http://www.GunFacts.info
Crap load of stats/info there w/sources to back it all up.......

Fact:
Medical mistakes kill
400,000 people per year –
equivalent to one fully
loaded jumbo jet crash per
day – or about 286 times the
rate of all accidental firearm
deaths. This translates
into 1 in 6 doctors causing
an accidental death, and 1 in
56,666 gun owners doing
the same.

Medical death statistics from Dr. David Lawrence, CEO Kaiser Permanente. Gun deaths 1993, CDC report

Fact: Around 2,000 patients each year – six per day – are accidentally killed or injured in
hospitals by registered nurses.

Thanks Comp-Tech!

Did I say 3 times? I meant 286 times...really!

So how can we get this info out in an effective manner during the conference? I will have Sunday off and I can put more info together for a letter to the editor, but work full days through the rest of the conference. At the very leastI'd like to get some flyers uparound Bell Harborfor those days. I would like to come up with a way topaint the conference as racist and get the word out in the Rainier valley and south and central parts of the city so that the mayor and police chief have the opportunity to answer to thier constituents.

I recently "escaped" from Kalifornia. I'd hate to see their delusions finding their way up here.

It's a dog and pony show cooked up by a mayor who wants a legacy of some sort. I'm more concerned by obese folks like da mayor who eat their way through my insurance pool rather than a small upsurge in gun related violanece (which, by the way, is committed by thug on thug violence).

Shhh, here's the secret about crims statistics: they are voluntarily sent to the FBI by the agencies. They have been and continue to be altered to achieve a particular response, increase in federal dollars, make a community appear safer or more dangerous that it really is and so on. I know, I wrote out UCRs for a coupe of years with pressures to "ensure the numbers were appropriate."

Upswing in violence? Wonder how many crimes have been committed by Kerlikowske's handgun?

Ha! I'm amazed. I'm so naive, I never questioned that someone might be cooking the books for ulterior motives. I would not have been an effective cop. I've got to start thinking a little deeper and questioning thestats that are presented.
