No charges were filed against a man who shot his neighbor's dog in the face after a deputy determined in was done in self defense.

A Crestview woman called authorities after her red nose pittbull came home from chasing a cat with a bloody face, according to a report from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

After taking a closer look, the woman realized her dog had been shot.

A deputy spoke with others in the neighborhood and a man admitted to shooting the dog with his shotgun. He said his girlfriend had called him and said the dog was fighting with another dog in the front yard.

When he got home, he recognized the dog as the same one that attacked his son one month earlier. He grabbed his shotgun and fired a shot above the dog's head, but the animal started running at him.

As the dog was approaching, he fired one shot in at its head. The animal ran away after being hit. The deputy explained to the dog's owner it was unfortunate, but was a case of self defense.

Either we are equal or we are not. Good people ought to be armed where they will, with wits and guns and the truth. LAB/NRA/GOP KMA$$

What was he using, a 20 ga. with birdshot? A 12 ga. of buckshot and the dog would have no head left. Of course, we don't know what distance this was, or if he had a choke, what length barrel, etc. But if he was close enough to aim over his head trying to scare him off, then he must have been close.

I don't think that the comment was meant to suggest moral equivalency, just to say that a dog that attacks a child should have been put to sleep in the first place. Not because of it's lack of human morals, but because it has proven itself to be dangerous. Just like you would shoot a rabid racoon on your property simply because it's rabid, I agree that a violent dog should be put down simply because it's violent.
