Woman shot at Patrick Henry Mall
    BY DAVID MACAULAY

A 55-year-old woman has been shot in the parking lot of Patrick Henry Mall.

She'd just gotten out of her car and was about to enter the mall when she had an altercation with a man, said Newport News Police Lt. Mike Grinstead. The woman was then shot in the right hand. The bullet went through her hand and entered her leg, he said.

The shooting happened about 7:10 p.m. during what police said was robbery attempt outside the entrance near Old Navy and Starbucks. The assailant ran off, police said. Two K-9 units searched for the man as onlookers gathered.

The woman was transported to a local hospital where she is in stable condition, police said.

The mall area was crowded with holiday shoppers at the time of the shooting. A section of the parking lot is roped off with crime scene tape, and crime scene technicians have been canvassing the area. About eight vehicles were within the crime scene, and the owners of those vehicles have been unable to retrieve them.

Newport News Police Chief James Fox, who is at the scene, said armed robberies are extremely rare at Patrick Henry Mall.

    Yikes.

What is the Patrick Henry Mall policy on firearms? They are not on the VCDL Gun Owner Unfriendly List.

Carry is prohibited there - they have no gun signs posted at the entrances to the mall. But there are no signs posted at the major chain stores... funny how I always enter the mall through the stores and not the main entrance.

I OCed there a few times in 2006 and never had any issues but I hadn't noticed the signs at the main entrances then.

Well, I'm really glad that policy kept everyone safe, huh? Just goes to show, banning guns doesn't stop crime.

Perhaps we the people should be the judges of that, the rarity of armed robberies somewhere. Where's the data? Where's HenrettaTroll's demand for someone else to do her research?

I always CC when I go there. The real Patrick Henry is probably doing about 5000 rpms about now.

    Update:

Teen arrested in Patrick Henry Mall shooting

    NEWPORT NEWS

Police arrested a 14-year-old boy tonight and charged him in the Tuesday robbery and shooting of a 51-year-old shopper in the parking lot of Patrick Henry Mall.

The Hines Middle School student has been placed in juvenile detention. Petitions were served at 10:25 p.m. for two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a robbery, attempted robbery and aggravated malicious wounding, Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley said.

The 14-year-old who was arrested at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, has been charged in the robbery and shooting of 51-year-old Hyo Cabrera near the food court entrance of the mall in Newport News.

Cabrera was confronted by a suspect shortly after getting out of her car at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday and shot in the hand and the thigh by a single bullet. Although her hand was significantly injured she is making a good recovery, police said.

Detectives working the case identified the 14-year-old through leads from anonymous Crime Line calls and located him at a friend's home in Newport News, Eley said.

"Alert school personnel and accurate Crime Line information allowed detectives to develop the leads resulting in this arrest," Eley said.

The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered, he said. The investigation is ongoing.

The shooting on Tuesday sparked a significant increase in police patrols in and around Patrick Henry Mall.

I wonder if he bought the gun from an "unlicensed gun dealer" at a gun show using the "gun show loophole". :what: Oh, oh, wait a minute, he's only 14, he probably broke a bunch of laws already....... We have to stop this activity. I know..... we need MORE laws to prevent this!

(for anyone that may not recognize it... this is tongue in cheek. More laws don't make criminals honest, the fear of punishment and/or the taste of punishment is what prevents crime; from a criminal perspective. For us honest folks, we don't break laws like robbery or assault, because we care about other people and other noble reasons.)

Oh... or the fear of "armed resistance" during the commission of said crime.

This is definite incentive to train for weak side shooting, isn't it?
