Wednesday, December 05, 2007

OMAHA, Neb.—Report: Man shot inside Omaha mall.[/b][/b]

At least one person was shot Wednesday inside a busy Omaha mall, local authorities are reporting.

Police locked down the Westroads Mall while they searched for the gunman, who has been described as a young black man.

It was unclear whether the shooter was still inside the mall or how many people were wounded.

An elderly man was found near an escalator inside the Von Maur inside the mall.

The lockdown has reportedly been lifted and shoppers are now allowed back inside

Two people were seen being removed on stretchers, and rescue workers were taking more stretchers inside the building.

Omaha television station KETV reported that an elderly man was shot inside the Von Maur department store.

Keith Fidler, a Von Maur employee, said he heard a burst of five to six shots followed by 15 to 20 more shots. Fidler said he huddled in the corner of the men's clothing department with about a dozen other employees until police yelled to get out of the store.

Fidler said he did not see the shooting but saw a person lying still by an elevator as he was leaving the store.

A woman who answered the phone at an Old Navy store said 20 to 30 customers were huddled with employees in a back storeroom.

"All we know was people were running and screaming down the hallway by Von Maur saying there was a shooting, and then they locked us down," said the woman, who said her name was Heidi.

Police were allowing some people to leave the mall, but no one was permitted to enter.

President Bush was in town Wednesday for a fundraiser in Omaha, but left about an hour before the shooting.

More proof why you should NEVER carry a gun. Just call the police and they'll save you. (sarcasm)

Seriously though, I would hate to be one of those 20-30 people huddled together in the Old Navy storeroom. Talk about feeling helpless! Hopefully not too many people were hurt.

It's all in training....Hand to hand combat (Our military is trained in this), martial arts, boxing, etc. A confident unarmed security officer that has been trained can make almost any area secure. But like the point brought up earlier yes there are limitations. But as far as a mall setting it is true 90% of the crime that happens there the offender is unarmed, thus unarmed security. You would have to be real justified to pull your sidearm on a little girl who just shoplifted some hairclips. Or pulling your sidearm on the kids you find smoking pot in there car. Most of the goal of unarmed security is to deter crime by physical presence. Yes there is a need for armed security as well. Armored car personel working with lots of cash, yes armed security. Shoplifters from Claires or other girly stores, Sears, and other stores unarmed security. So to clarify it yes need for both.:celebrate

There are possibly two suspects. One of them may be among the dead. Radio reports indicate one person has a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Another suspect may be in custody - according to police reports. Police are asking everyone to stay away from the area. The neighborhoods around the mall are believed to be safe. Police are asking anyone in their cars outside the mall to stay inside their cars.

There are now 9 confirmed dead, 10 if you count the shooter. As MSNBC reports.

Apparantly the shooter was 19 years old.

Sorry, according to the Brady Bunch, this could NOT have happened!

Westroads Mall is a "gun free" zone: http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pag...&u_sid=2355124(Link is getting SLAMED!)

Few merchants see need to post no-weapons sign
BY JOHN KEENAN WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Signs you'll see at the entrance of O'Connor's Irish Pub in the Old Market:

"Restrooms are for customers only."

"City Council: Please Send in the Non-Smokers."

What you won't see is a "No Concealed Weapons" sign reminding customers that bars are among the few businesses in Nebraska where it is illegal to carry a gun.

Almost three months after the start of a state law allowing people to carry concealed weapons, signs banning guns from privately owned businesses haven't exactly popped up all over the Omaha area.

In fact, although some chains such as Bag 'N Save have posted signs and shopping malls such as Westroads Mall have added "no weapons" clauses to their posted codes of conduct, many small businesses haven't seen the need. And at least one that did later reconsidered.

Under the law, concealed handguns are banned from some businesses, including bars and financial institutions. Other businesses and employers can ban concealed weapons from their property by posting a sign that guns are not allowed...
