LIMA, Ohio, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- The police chief in Lima, Ohio, acknowledges officers anticipated finding children during a recent drug raid that left a woman dead and her infant son wounded.

Police Chief Greg Garlock said it was suspected children may have been inside the targeted home, but conducted the raid nonetheless, the Lima News reported Sunday.

"Because of the fact there were toys on the outside of the residence they were concerned about the fact there could be children inside and they were taking every precaution when they made entry," Garlock said Saturday.

The Friday night raid resulted in the death of a 26-year-old mother, who was shot by an officer. The mother's 1-year-old son also was shot accidentally during the raid, but was said to be in stable condition Saturday.

A somber Garlock said state officials will investigate the shootings, the newspaper reported.

"This is not what any of us wanted to happen," the police official said.

Drug Raid = Dynamic Entry = Terrible Choice for Serving Warrants

Why risk the lives of small children? At the local level there is recourse for this sort of thing. Local cops will be held accountable. They have cleaned house in Atlanta after the unnecessary killing of a 90 something year old lady and the attempted cover up. The ability for the community to correct bad police behavior does not exist at the Federal level.

Yes the mother in this story appears to have been wrong. She brought the child into a potentially dangerous situation. Yes the police have a difficult job. No I don't want the police to placetoddlers in imminent danger in the war on drugs.

All this crash, bang , boom NO knock warrant service needs to stop. Mommy sold a little rock, so what. Is it worth the man- power expenditure and a baby getting shot to stamp out the drug problem ?

Personally I don't think so. Somewithin The Law enforcement in this countryare so out of control.
