I just went to the Ar-15 site and read the entire thread and posted search warrant and federal LEO documents. The accused didn't just loan out a AR-15 that malfunctioned. He loaned out an illegallymodified ar-15. He was buying rifles , modifying to fire in three shot burst. The modified weapon had three positions, safe, fire and unmarked. When in the unmarked position it would fire in three round burst with a single pull of the trigger. That is an illegal conversion to enable automatic fire.
The gentleman caught with the weapon was at a conservationand was reported for shooting a automatic weapon. He admitted to having "ordered " one of the converted weapons from the accused and was shooting a loaner until his converted rifle came in. He fired the weapon twice on the three shot burst setting before it malfunctioned. The weapon was seized and led to substantial charges against the accused and now a conviction.
Here is the real point of the whole situation from my perspective:
The accused posted that the Feds hadbeen electronically monitoring his computer communications. They had defeated his security and fire wall systems resulting in a slowed system and constantly being kicked of the INTERNET. He found himself quite impressed with the governments ability to breach his advanced computer security. Not good for freedom. Sooner or latter this will be used against citizens to monitor their INTERNET activities. We need to be careful what we say on the INTERNET, and on sites like this that are obviously monitored by law enforcement.
No one needs to get caught up in something over a misinterpreted comment being used to get a search warrant or electronic monitoring (T3) focused on them.
In this case the accused was dealing in firearms illegally. Converting weapons to fire more than once per pull of the trigger. Fine he violated the law and was arrested and successfully prosecuted. Whether I agree with government controls on automatic weapons is irrelevant( I find all six Federal gun control Acts to be Unconstitional myself ) , this guy was not a "victim". He is a criminal according to our laws. Law enforcement did their job and the system worked.
