Senate Committee Defeats Attack on Virginia’s Preemption Laws!

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Please Contact Members of the Committee and Thank Them for Voting NO!
On Tuesday, January 22, three anti-gun proposals that targeted Virginia’s commonsense firearms preemption statute failed to make it out of the Senate Local Government Committee, effectively stopping all three bills before they had a chance to be voted on by the full Senate.

Senate Bill 32 sponsored by Senator Mamie Locke (D-2), would have allowed localities to prohibit possession of firearms in public libraries. Senate Bill 33, also sponsored by Senator Locke, would have allowed localities to prohibit possession of firearms at outdoor events, such as fairs and carnivals. Senate Bill 300, introduced by Senator Mary Margaret Whipple (D-31), which would have authorized any locality to ban the possession of firearms in government buildings.

Please call or email the following members of the Senate Local Government Committee who voted “NO” and thank them for responsibly protecting the Commonwealth’s preemption statute and voting against SB32, SB33, and SB300.
