I plan on attending a FrontSight handgun course in April 2008. I will be flying in from New York. I should be flying into Vegas. Once Im out of the airport I would like the opportunity to open carry. Being from New York, I was amazed at open carry opportunities most of the states enjoy. So I just want to make sure its kosher.

Does Las Vegas allow open carry (Philly in Pa, does not for example) Is open carry acceptable when checking into a hotel? How many people can I expect to see open carry on my drive from Vegas to Frontsight. I imagine Casino open carry is a no no.

Is law enforcement generally aware of open carry rights.

I see parks and rest stops are also off limits. Is the temp in Nevada hot in April where I would prefer to open carry rather than conceal carry (HR 218) If I open carry will people stare and call local law enforcement. I guess I'm just hoping Im not the only guy who will be in open carry mode and everyone else will be misinformed and lacking in knowlege about open carry.

Signed - Nervous about open carry

thanks

I imagine Casino open carry is a no no. In LV you would be correct, Pahrump is a little more rural and it might be excepted their.

You mentioned HR 218.
:question:Are you current/retire LEO?
You might have class mates that tell you OC is bad for reasons................

While open carry is defacto legal in Nevada it is not commonly done in the high volume tourist areas. You can expect Metro to have a chat with you if you walk down the strip with a firearm visable.

The casino hotels will ask you to leave if security, which is very heavy, sees your gun and they can and will bar you from their property. The trespass law is designed to give casino management unlimited power.

My understanding is that outside of the tourist areas no one will care. Call metro and ask them if you have any questions, they are usually very helpful. http://www.lvmpd.com/and http://www.lvmpd.com/permits/firearms_concealed.htmlfor firearms info.

Be aware that "public" building under Prohibited Locations means government building.

Nevada firearms statutes start here http://leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-202.html#NRS202Sec253.

Go concealed inside casinos, and don't tell the checkin desk you have one. Otherwise they will insist you check your gun in with security. I understand they will promptly return your piece when you're leaving the hotel, but expect you to recheck it upon returning.

Elsewhere, OC is fine. Concealed in the car is fine. You can have it in the glove box or holstered on your hip without a CCW permit. Just don't go on the property, including parking lots, of any schools (public or private) including college campuses.

The law also allows OC or CC inside restaurants and bars, and even allows consumption while carrying. The limit for driving is 0.08, the limit for possession of a firearm is 0.10. And even if you exceed that limit (please don't drive) generally your firearm would only be (permanently) confiscated if there were additional circumstances, such as brandishing.

I have a similar situation (except I'm not LE or former LE): My wife and I will be vacationing at a resort in South Las Vegas in late April. We are both CCW holders in NC which is not recroprical with NV (sad). We plan to travel to several areas of the state and to Sedona (where we are recroprical with AZ). Since we cannot legally CCin NVI am considering OC when we go out of the city. I am aware of no carry on school property, casino's, government buildings, rest areas andparks, possibly tribal landsand potential problems in N. LV & Bolder City (thanks to this forum for that info). Would I likely have any problems outside the areas that I have specified? Would I need a full outside holster/clip etc.? If I OC here I have a KelTec P11 with side clip and my wife has the P3AT with clip which carries IWB but just looks like it is tucked into belt with only part of grip visible.

We love traveling to AZ, FL, VA, TN and several other states because we arelegal there and in about 30 states plus the 2-3 that honor all CCW's. I look forward to the day when that will extend to all 50 (not likely for CA, NJ, NY, MD, MA).

Thanks for your valuable info!

The problem with "Concealed" is the interpretation of the definition, which comes from NRS 202.3653:

“Concealed firearm” means a loaded or unloaded pistol, revolver or other firearm which is carried upon a person in such a manner as not to be discernible by ordinary observation.
Is "ordinary" observation that of a store clerk, or of a LEO?

I recommend OWB carry to avoid hassles, but the notion of being stopped and a LEO recognizing your firearm carried IWB ought to pass the letter of the definition. If you can tell it's a firearm, it's not concealed.

I've used both (IWB/OWB) with no issues.

Lest we forget the OP is current LEO and will be afforded some latitude.
No fault of his, just the way the system works.

I have done a lot of work in Nevada over the years and I have carried all over the state openly, excepting those areas such as Boulder City, that had laws against.

Never a problem.

I have carried in casinos in the smaller town no problem, BUT in Vegas and Reno, you will be asked to leave.

Since my stateis now recognized by Nevada I do the following;

I use a pancake holster and my shirt out when Iwant concealed and in when I want open. I normallyprefer my shirt in so this is no problem for me.

Have fun and bring money.

Open Carry is just fine in Nevada... I'd warn against frequenting casinos, as they will ask you to leave your weapon at the security desk, but all-in-all it's not a problem here in Vegas ;)
