If you were on the fence, you shouldn't be now.

No real id? No firearm purchases (possibly in the future)

    Q: What about buying firearms?
That's an open question. Homeland Security last month refused to rule out requiring Real ID for firearm purchases in the future. When asked about requiring Real ID to buy a firearm, Homeland Security replied: "DHS will continue to consider additional ways in which a Real ID license can or should be used and will implement any changes to the definition of 'official purpose' or determinations regarding additional uses for Real ID consistent with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. DHS does not agree that it must seek the approval of Congress as a prerequisite to changing the definition in the future."

I can't wait to hear the "conservative" drama queens (Hannity, Dennis Miller, O'Reilly, et al) tell me how this is necessary for national security. The neocons are just as dangerous as the far left...they both want to take away your rights in exchange for taking care of you.

Being from New Hampshire, I do not think that the citizens of that sovereign state would long tolerate that sort of tyrannical abuse. I think that the Granite State would stop issuing divers licenses all together and start issuing live free or die militia cards. Membership in the state militia wold exempt said citizen from the 1968 GCA and the Brady gun law lunacy.

Thundar, I would hope that you are correct. Some states, as noted in the other thread on RealID, have taken a stand against it, but when push comes to shove, I'm afraid they are going to cave as they have since 1865.

Why would you ever leave a state like that?!

It was great. No state income tax, no state sales tax. People actually value freedom. Alas I really wanted to fly, so I loaded up the truck and went to flight school in Florida. 20 Years of service to country, and now I have a great civilian job in Virginia. Hard to resist the call to return sometimes, especially when I read about the Free State Project or when the Red Sox are in a pennant race.

Virginia isn't bad though. Open carry of handguns and rifles had given me some of that sense of freedom back.

We should have seen that coming.
I'll make you an offer: I will argue and fight for all of your rights, if you will do the same for me. That is the only way freedom can work. We have to respect all rights, all the time--and strive to win the rights of the other guy as much as for ourselves.

If I am equal to another, how can I legitimately govern him without his express individual consent?

There is no human being on earth I hate so much I would actually vote to inflict government upon him.

Maine, N.H. and Vermont are all very pro gun.

In Maine the executive branch is prohibited by law from cooperating in any way with Real ID. The maniacs can't even ask for the extension.

There are a lot of people there that actually believe in freedom.

That is the problem with the extremes on the left and the right. When you look at the far left socialist/communist groups and the far right white supremicist/neo-nazi groups for examples, their protest signs and positions are very similar. You will see nearly identical anti-Israel, anti-semitic tracts from both sides and the same net effects from their proposals. While political views are often represented on a cartesian co-ordinate system, the fact is they are more spherical in nature. Once you get way left or way right, the positions wrap around to nearly meet or actually overlap. The most interesting phenomena in this to me is that both ends of the spectrum are so myopic that they utterly fail ito realize this fact.
