I'll be coming to Reno this weekend for a little "boy's night out" to celebrate with a buddy on his way out to Afghanistan for 18 months. We will be staying at one of the fancy casino/hotels downtown and plan to walk around to some of the other local attractions. From what I've read on this forum, it seems NV has state preemption and recognizes our right to self defense, but I have a couple specific questions:
  • Any statutes/ordinances regulating carrying in casinos?
  • Any statutes/ordinances regulating being armed while being served alcohol? (Before I get berated... I treat being armed like being behind the wheel of a car. If I'm armed I stay sober, etc.)
  • Anybody know if the casinos will object to their patrons being armed?
  • When carrying in my car can I carry on my belt holster (which is somewhat concealed by my center console) or should I keep the gun (in the holster) on the dash to make sure there's no argument?
I know this is short notice, and I probably won't have time to respond right away. So, thanks in advance for any responses.

I look forward to my short reprieve from the "Mag Size Doesn't Matter Because You Can't Carry It Loaded" State.

No regulations prohibit the carry in casinos. As private property, they're obviously allowed to ask you to leave.

The law states you may be in possession of a firearm so long as your BAC is less than 0.10. The DUI limit is 0.08, so if you're OK to drive, you're OK to be in possession of a firearm. If you do happen to find yourself in a situation where you're BAC exceeds 0.10, the law does say that permanent confiscation of said firearm is only justified if the person is irresponsible, such as improperly handling the firearm, brandishing, etc.

Some folks say Northern Nevada casinos are more willing to accept carry by patrons, in fact one person even mentioned he was carrying for several hours while sitting at a blackjack table playing cards. I am always concealed here in Southern Nevada when inside a casino, because I hear the exact opposite is true. And I don't feel like the hassle of finding out.

Open or concealed in your car is OK with or without a permit. Carrying OC-style on your belt holster is completely legal while driving. It can also be in your dashboard, center console, trunk, under your seat, in your glovebox, whatever. Without a permit, just don't conceal it upon your person (in your pocket for example).

Have fun and good luck. Tell your buddy THANKS FOR THE SACRIFICE from the rest of us.

Hey good to know, thanks! Just got to Reno tonight..
Too cool! I'll be staying at the Sands, but I imagine I'll be hitting the other nearby casinos: Silver Legacy, et al. If you see a guy with a Glock 23 in his left hip (cross-draw) that's probably me. Feel free to say hello.

My three buddies and I drove in from CA on Saturday (2/16) and arrived about 1:00. Due to work schedules and such, we only stayed for about 24 hours, but I had an awesome time! We've already made plans to come back once my buddy get's back from Afghanistan. Next time we'll be staying for at least a few days. I'm hoping to get in at least one more weekend trip before I move to NH, but I don't have particulars planned yet.

While in Reno, I OC'd into 5 or 6 of the major downtown casinos. Didn't get many odd looks, and the ones I got were from the tourists. Not once was I asked to leave a casino, which I have to admit surprised me a little. The only place I didn't OC was to a club where I planned to (and did) do some drinking.

It was refreshing to be so comfortable carrying. Here in CA I'm constantly in fear that I will be harrassed (or worse) by the LEOs. Can't wait to do it again.

Glad to hear you had a good trip. I've open carried into several of the downtown casinos in Reno without incident. I chose to open carry when my buddy from CA came to visit before we started honoring his UT permit. He had to open carry, so I decided to as well. We had no problems at all inside of Circus Circus, El Doradao, Silver Legacy, or Peppermill.
