Shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday, February 21, police responded to Milano’s Restaurant at 6961 Hechinger Drive for a possible shot person. Officers arrived and met with a 23-year-old Centreville-area man who works as an armed security guard at Milano’s. The guard responded to a fight in the bar area of the restaurant. He was escorting one of the men involved outside and was jumped by three to four other men, one wielding a knife. Fearing for his life, the guard pulled his weapon and fired one round, striking the man with the knife in the abdomen. The suspects ceased the assault, picked their cohort up and fled in a van. The guard sustained non life-threatening injuries.A short time later, officers located the van in front of 5227 Cather Road in Springfield, occupied by three men, including the shot person. Rescue transported the wounded man to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he eventually succumbed to his wound. Yordy Adaud Salguero Urmeneta, 27, of 5227 Cather Road in Springfield was pronounced dead on Thursday, February 21 at approximately 5 a.m. [/align]

No charges have been placed and the investigation will continue into all aspects of this incident.

What amazes me is that about a yer ago I spent about 2 weeks in Fairfax attending training classes. I really liked Fairfax and never really felt in danger or afraid. I found it to be a wonderful city that I would consider moving to under the right circumstances. After reading about Fairfax so much on this forum I wonder if I am thinking about the same place or is where I live that much more dangerous than there. Everyone I met was friendly and courteous unlike many othe places I have visited and spent time in. I never had any run ins with LEO or any of the locals. I know two weeks is not a lot of time to get to know a city but OCDC sure paints a different picture of Fairfax than what I found. We are talking about Fairfax, VA which is right outside DC aren't we? :?

Every area has problems.

It all depends on what you are comparing it to.
You are mostly reading about negative encounters, if we all posted the positive we would be on line all day.

I realize that but for some reason there seems to be something about Fairfax posted on here everyday. :uhoh: If I didn't know better I wouldhave a much different opinion about the area from reading here.

Fairfax is actually a very nice area, but like what was said, every area has problems. Also, people post on here when bad things happen as soon as they can but are less likely to post the good things that happen every day just because they are mundane.

I don't know if I agree with that statement but I understand how that's your perception. To clarify, I used to think I was "safe" because I lived 2 miles from the district police station. I figured hey, if I needed the police, they'd be here pretty quickly. I also figured hey, I have me one of them shiney fangled alarm contraptions, so if anyone were to break into my house, it would wake me up and shoo away the evil doer with it's scary siren. I also figured hey, if that didn't work, my dog would bite said evil doer before he got to me giving me even more of a chance to react. I also never figured I would "need" to carry a gun because the police were always a phone call away.

Then I started reading my community newspaper, not the county, the one for the town I live in - which is just outside of Fairfax city.I started reading about all the local knuckleheads doing things in my still fairly safe neighborhood, but not necissarily as safe as I thought it was. Now I check the Fairfax County Policenews releasesdaily. Especially since anti-gun people do read this site and say, why would you need...I can say because this happened in my neighborhood, my city, as a citizen they were able to help themselves when it mattered.

Why would you ever needto conceal carry a gun into a bar? I don't know, some knuckle head with a knife might try and stab youbecause he's drunk? Sure the security officer wasn't concealed, but that's not the point. It could have been anyone the guy with a knife was going after. It could have been you because you looked at him funny. I've seen drunkpeople do some pretty silly things. Heck I've done some pretty silly things in my younger days drunk.

One thing to remember is that Fairfax County is 399 square miles.

This county has people from all over the world and many from South America as was the person shot here.

For its size.... crime seems rather low.

Also, many of the Virginia postings are from members in this part of the state, I think. So, it's local stuff. However, living here all my life, I've seen the changes. I would still say it is a great place to live.

PT111 - Please don't take it the wrong way. I don't think Fairfax is a horrible place, and Leo I don't think you did but if you did; I wasn't bashing your boys. It is a big county with only so many resources, and they do have some pretty fleet feet. I wasn't complaining

I think Double R has a good point, alot of people in the Virginia thread are from the Fairfax or surrounding areas, and we hit the board frequently sharing what we know. I recently went to the MN board on this site, and they basically stated "We don't visit there much, we have our own concealed/open carry firearms boards." It makes sense to me. How many websites are there for any particular thing? Hundreds?

I grew up in MN, we lived 5 miles from town, not as far out in the "boonies" as some of my classmates, but far enough. We never ever dreamed of locking our doors, ever. Even on vacation. For weeks. Back then though house alarms were for rich people and I don't know how good the technology was. My town had it's first shooting (population 3000 at the time) directly in front of the Post Office, broad daylight, on main street in 1983 or so. One of my neighborhood friends dad worked for a PD 25 miles away as a Detective and responded to the scene before the county guys did. The town today still doesn't have a Police force and relies on the county, even though the population is pushing 11.5K people and Meth is running rampant through the county and the state.

You wouldn't know those things though if you weren't looking or someone didn't tell you. I still check the local paper to see the police blotter and if any of my classmates are "famous", occasionally I'm right. The point is if you look closely enough at your own community you might be surprised what you haven't been seeing all along

Naw... No biggie...

But people should remember one thing... Being close to a police station does not mean you will get more cops.. They all leave the station and patrol their area.

The station is basically empty of guys that will be dispatched to your home.

I use to respond to where this happened, its Backlick Rd at the Beltway, its not a good area to be in. And, where they picked him up at is just off of Edsall Rd. The police in this area was really good to work with.

I thought Milanos was off of Rolling, near the intersection of rolling and old keen mill? Springfield seems to have gone down hill in the last 10 years. My friends car was stolen from the springfield mall parking lot. I actually found it abandoned at the near by Navy Federal Credit Union.

Which is why I noted the location of the station and that I thought it had made me safer. Now I know it doesn't matter.
