Greetings. I had a strange occurrence earlier today and wanted to ask everyone else here if it has ever happened to you.

I try to OC wherever/whenever I can. I usually feel "naked" when I don't OC (or at least have my gun in my car somehow). I've grown accustomed to having my weapon with me when in public (day or night, weekdays, weekends, etc)....

But today between 8:00am and 7:00pm (which included taking my son to the doctor's, hanging around inside my house, right after dropping him off at mommy's, etc) I just didn't FEEL like OCing. Yes, I considered it. Yes, I thought about it. But in my mind I just shrugged my shoulders and said "meh" and left it at home while running around this morning and afternoon. I even felt a little "off" without it....

Has this "mood" ever hit anyone else who regularly OC's?? Have you ever left your weapon behind for whatever reason (other than it was unlawful to carry it somewhere)?? Have you ever just said "nah not today" and didn't OC??

The only time I don't OC is when I go to WalMart, thanks to everyone there seemingly having it out for me when I do.

And in that instance, I CC.

Usually by throwing on a calf-length black leather trenchcoat. :celebrate

When I leave my weapon behind, it's usually because I don't want to deal with the hassel. For example, if I'm going out and then playing a sport immediately after, I'll leave the gun at home because I don't want to deal with securing it while I play soccer or whatever.

Also, I never OC in a suit, always CC, usually IWB at 6 o'clock, purely for style reasons . I shaved my head a few months ago and rocked a black suit with a white shirt, red tie, and a concealed glock, and I couldn't have felt like more of a video game geek (Agent 47 from the Hitman series, for those who have a life). And people say video games are a bad influence.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but unless it's too big of a headache, I'm always armed when I legally can be.

Sure I have, but I always end up OC'ing anyway. I OC everywhere I legally can and there are times that I would rather not have to watch who's standing too close to my strong side, etc...

I'll admit on Sunday I took the wife downtown Reno to one of the casinos and I DIDNOT OC. Yes, yes, I know...but while gambling, the drinks are FREE and I won't carry and drink, period. Somebody say free drinks? You know how many drinks you can put away while playing nickle slots? Let's say that wedrank a lot more than they won! Muahahaha....

Since I usually have to CC due to local ordinance, I most often have the other issue of just NOT wanting to CC. Sometimes it is a pain. And being that I do live in a very low violent crime town, if I am just running to a store near my house to grab something quickly, and maybe I'm wearing something that CC is not practical with I'll just go without. Other times, being that the only place in the county I cannot OC is within my city limits, I'll drive the 8 miles to the next town where I can OC to go shopping or get something to eat so I don't have to mess with the whole CC thing.

But yeah, there are times that it just seems more hassle than it is worth to carry at all. Sometimes I can run an errand and get back home in less time than I can change clothes or get one of the smaller pistols out, unlocked and loaded so I can carry reasonably.

I sometimes don't want to OC, yes. In fact, it happens more often than you might think...and you know what? I don't. But I NEVER go unarmed. It's why I got my CPL in the first place (and whether I should have to get a CPL in order to conceal is another story altogether...), and yes, when I don't feel like OCing, I will simply conceal. I'm still armed, but just concealing.

Lately I noticed I got into a kick of just concealing all the time, cause it was "easier" than OCing......so I've started trying to OC more. Really, I say carry however you are comfortable carrying at the time, but don't ever just go out unarmed. My .02.......

Thanks for the responses so far! I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes just doesn't "feel" like it.

I don't think it was even due to the "hassle" factor. I just didn't have interest in carrying. It's not like putting my SERPA on (paddle style) would have been a big deal. It takes 5 seconds. Then another 5 seconds to get my pistol and load it up and holster it. So for me, it wasn't a matter of going through the hassle of preparing to OC, because it only take a few seconds....

Although, some of you are lucky: if you don't want to OC, you can still CC. I don't have my CCDW License here, so CC isn't an option for me. So, if I don't OC, I'm almost completely "defenseless" save for my Spyderco. Which is why I feel "naked" when I don't OC - it means I don't have a gun w/ me at all.

I think I'll make it a point to make sure I OC when I go out, because part of me didn't like how it felt to know I was unarmed and that my gun was miles away in my house. Like compmanio365 said: don't ever go out unarmed.

This is why I am a supporter of doing what is necessary to be able to both OC and CC if possible. There are times that one or the other is more practical or more convenient. Having the option to do both to my mind is preferable.

I bought a couple of these just for such situations. They're cheap and slim enough to slide under most car seats, and you can secure them either with the included steel cable, or by bolting them down.

Since getting them, I don't go anywhere without my weapon. Even if it's really inconvenient to carry it on me, I throw it in the car safe.

Oh, and as to the original question, I frequently don't want to deal with the hassle of OC. When I OC I feel like I have to be more alert and more courteous (not that I'm generally rude) and I sometimes worry about OC'ing in situations where I want someone to do something for me and they have some discretion about it, e.g. returning something not quite in accordance with store policy, but I know there's a good chance they'll do it if I'm likable and they're in a good mood. Since I can CC, I often carry a light jacket around with me even in warm weather so that I can throw it on to cover up.

I'd say that the majority of the time I CCC (casual concealed cary). I have the gun at the 2 o'clock position (maybe 1:30), with a light jacket on that doesn't quite conceal the whole gun and frequently exposes it completely when I turn or catch a breeze or something.

I realize that I'm being the oddball here, but other than at work (I am a security officer), my only mode of cary is CC, and there have been plenty of times that I did not want to CC. It is indeed true that I CC because I prefer for people not to know that I'm carrying, but there are times when trying to figure out how to dress in order to best hide my gun can be a real pain in the butt, especially in the summer. Even though OC technically is not illegal with a permit in my part of Indiana (Gary; try telling that to the people who'll call the police if they spot you carrying), doing so here, especially looking the way I look (young Black male with cornrows, body covered with tattoos, and a wardrobe that consists mostly of baggy clothes), is almost an invitation to be harassed by police. That is why I only CC when I'm not at work. The letter of the law notwithstanding, OC generally is not a good idea here.

I think the point is (dave_in_delaware, please correct me if I'm wrong here) not that he wants to CC insead of OC, but that he sometimes doesn't feel like carrying at all.

I can say that I know exactly what you are talking about. One thing I do is carry in my backpack using my el cheapo IWB holster that is damn near useless for anything else. I usually have a pack with me (not a BOB, usually a backpack for my laptop), so I don't have to worry about staying concealed (I work in Denver so I occasionally have to), or having anyone question me. I am however, always armed.

I do get the feeling, but I always decide I need to do it. This is part of why I still haven't gotten a CWP. I don't want to get lazy with it and stop OCing. Like someone else on here always says, "I carry for protection. I OC to exercise my right".

As I said above and have said numerous other times, I am a proponent of both types of carry for a lot of reasons so that's where my POV comes from.

I live in a city that has a local ordinance against OC. My home and businesses are in this city. I have to CC every day unless I am in my offices or at home or travel out of the city limits. I can't tell you how often CC is a pain in the butt. Especially in our quite hot summers and even moreso being that I am a tuck the shirt in kind of guy and hate having one untucked. I look forward to the times during the day I can OC. Sometimes I go 5-10 miles out of my way, each way, to shop or eat someplace I can OC.

I don't think you or anyone else who has the courage to OC in the first place is going to "get lazy" having a CC license and stop OCing. I suggest "go for it" because it is almost always better to have more options rather than fewer.

Yeah some days I just don't want to deal with having to think if I am legal everywhere I need to go during the day. This includes schools and posted properties.
