Alabama CCW Veteran to Visit Reno

I grew up in Fallon and joined the Army in '88. I've only been home twice since, as I have settled down with mybeautiful Southern Bell. After leaving the service, I'vemade my home in the great state of Alabama these last 12 years.

Like Nevada, Alabama is also a OC state. Sadly, our leaders and Nevada leaders have yet to hammer out the Reciprocity terms for concealed carry. I've had a 'Bama permit for several years now.

Concealed carry is as much a part of my daily life as brushing my teeth, flushing the toilet, and wearing shoes. Seldom do I open carry, as I feel it will sacrifice the element of surprise that may mean the difference in an engagment.

I'm planning on taking my wife to visit my Mom who lives now in Reno. I am pleased to read that Nevada allows any legally minded adult to OC. The only questions I have concern off limits establishments.

Handgunlaw.us and my other favorite sites for carry laws continously mention "public building" as no-go places.

We will stay at the Grand Sierra hotel/casino during our week long stay. I don't expect to spend much time in the casino, but I am concerned about OC while at the hotel. I'm waiting upon their response to my quesitons (I emailed them earlier this morning).

I'd like to address my question tothose of you accustomed to OC, specifically those without concealed permits. What should I be aware of? I expect we'll visit with the family, go out to supper a few times, hit some of the tourist traps (I'd like to see Virginia City again), and visit Fallon once or twice.

Any wisdom will help. It's been a long time since I've come home, and I'd hate to have a weapons charge follow me back to the South.

Thank you.

P.S.

Very nice site yall have here.

RangerVet, welcome to OCDO! I am a displaced Virginia resident now in Reno and while I do have a VA CHP, I never used it and prefer to OC anyway. Good thing too, because I'm in the same boat with no reciprocity. The only difference is the fingerprints (that the FED alreadyhas since I'm retired Navy (and DNA, and blood, urineand other assorted bodily fluids).

Nevada is a great place to OC, though I'd like to see State Parks opened up. We have quite a few threads on this very topic, though not necessarily about Reno. Locked and loaded OC is no problem. No "two actions away from firing" or anything like that.

I've OC'ed in RENO quite a bit and never had any problems. I've been in a few downtown casinos, walked around downtown without any mention whatsoever. A casino can ask you to leave as it's private property, but AFAIK, that hasn't happened here in Reno.

In your car, OC on your hip is fine, concealed in your car is also legal (glovebox, under seat, etc) just NOT on your person.

In a nutshell:

No OC in a State Park (unloaded and cased in vehicle OK).
No OC at a roadside park or rest area (unloaded and cased in vehicle OK).
No carry at all on school property.
No carry at all in public buildings w/ posted signs and metal detectors (ie courthouses)
No carry at all in public buildings of airports.
No carry at all in Child Care Facilities (including approved private homes).
No carry where posted (trespass laws apply).

Lots of info in the Nevada forum: http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum36/

The Nevada firearms statutes are here:

And specifics for concealed carry are here:

Did I miss anything guys?

Oh, and Storey County has a law still on the books that prohibits carry at all in Virginia City, but that law has been pre-empted by Nevada State Law. The issue is being addressed, but I haven't heard anything as of late and haven't had a chance to OC there yet to test it for myself.

I would hope that the Police/Sheriff recognize the futility of making an arrest when there is state preemption. It can only cause unnecessary and completely avoidable embarassment for the department.

I have open carried at the Grand Sierra a lot and nobody has said anything yet to me. I have no concealed carry permit.

I think Bob has most of it covered.

You can carry at any private place but if the owner asks you to leavea place you must. The only place I've ever been told to leave was Costco.

In addition to not being able to carry at schools, you may not have firearmsat state-supported Colleges. http://system.nevada.edu/Institutio/index.htm I believe that is the full list of the places considered to be NSHE. (all of them have college in the name except for Desert Research Institute)

While Idefinitelywouldn't advise going to roadside parks or posted government buildings, the wording is a bit funky.

The law says you may not "exhibit" a firearm at a roadside park or rest area. Whatever that means.

The wording for public buildings with signs or metal detectorsis something like "A permittee shall not carry a concealed firearm while he is on the premises of: A public building that has a metal detector at each public entrance or a sign posted at each public entrance indicating that no firearms are allowed in the building"

You may not carry a firearm if your blood alcohol level is over .10. But you can carry into bars etc.with no issues.

Also, buildings belonging to the federal government are of course off limits, just as they are everywhere else. (Don't go into the post office.)

Oh and if you are in a vehicle with a long gun, make sure there is no round in the chamber. You can keep all of your pistols ready to go, but a hunting law says no long guns with rounds in chambers if they are in a vehicle. The magazine can be fully loaded though. (If you aren't in a vehicle a round is okay in the chamber of a long gun.)

Reno is an easy place to open carry. Most people around here don't care, and the LEOs are trained on its legallity when they go through the academy. You may have some trouble in the casinos, but like others have said I've never had any issue OCing in casinos myself. Never tried the GSR though.

Aye, Reno and Sparks both are quite carry-friendly. The only places I've actually seen no weapons signs are Meadowood Mall and movie theatres. Even then Im not sure about the theatres, but I know when I worked there 3 years ago the company policy simply said 'No firearms on the premesis', but I cant remember if they actively posted it on the front doors. Either way, I wouldnt carry there - chances are youll be asked to leave.

Ive OC'ed in Meadowood before (Ill just say I didnt see the signs), without any trouble, and I know more than a few guards saw me packing. I did this knowing I could be asked to leave, but I got the impression that responsible carry was treated with due respect, and the results of my trip reflected that.

The above is true nearly anywhere here in Reno. If you are a reasonable person simply carrying, I wouldnt expect to get too much beef from anyone. The most I've had was the 'is that legal?' and the 'why carry that?' questions from cashiers and the like in the stores I go to. All of these questions I can and do answer, and the people who asked seem to be content.

Another note is that every gas station Ive been in, the employees are watchful until you pay. After that, every time you go back in, it seems that the employees are actually more relaxed about having a responsible armed citizen in their store. I have found this to be true with most of the 7-11's around town, especially the ones which are located in the 'rougher' neighborhoods.

Anyway, enough from me on this.
