Thats kinda where it goes no law stating that you have to have a pistol purchase permit. I also would say that you acquired it through a private sale in another state if questioned.
But Another thing in my opinion is its a PISTOL PURCHASE PERMIT.

Not a PISTOL ACQUIREMENT PERMIT.

I will say this IMHO at some point in time you would probably want to get a transfer done.

http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_14/GS_14-402.html
§ 14‑402. Sale of certain weapons without permit forbidden.
(a) It is unlawful for any person, firm, or corporation in this State to sell, give away, or transfer, or to purchase or receive, at any place within this State from any other place within or without the State any pistol or crossbow unless: (i) a license or permit is first obtained under this Article by the purchaser or receiver from the sheriff of the county in which the purchaser or receiver resides; or (ii) a valid North Carolina concealed handgun permit is held under Article 54B of this Chapter by the purchaser or receiver who must be a resident of the State at the time of the purchase
Burninsteeda04, you are wrong. Furthermore, you REALLY shouldn't suggest that someone lie to law enforcement. There are no exceptions to this law. If you are over 18 but under 21, you must leave the state in order to legally acquire a handgun.

Unenforceable? Ifsomeone purchases a handgun legally for the purpose of giving it to someone who can not obtain a pistol purchase permit, that is a crime. Furthermore, by giving the handgun to that individual, that is ALSO an illegal transfer of a handgun, making both parties guilty of another crime. If that handgun ever has its serial number traced, it will go back to the person that legally purchased it. Now they can either admit that they illegally transfered it to another person, or they can lie. NOT a good situation to be in.

Now keep in mind I'm not saying I agree with any of this crap. This is just what the law says.

I spoke to the BATF in Raliegh and was told that it is not illegal for you to possess at 18 under 21 but it is illegal for you to purchase. You may recive a handgun at 18 as a gift. However you may not purchase amunition for the purposes of discharging a firearm. This was a phone interview and I can not cite this. But I see a huge conflict with the GS 14-402. Im not sure how to adress this issue. I also spoke to One Shot gun works. His understanding was that GS-14-402 was for the TRANSFER of a firearm.

looks like the AG should be contacted

This is got to be one of the most difficult questions i have run across. I really wish someone could come up with a definitive answer on this question. Regardless I will get my pistol purchase permit and do a transfer bottom line.

DAMN! I was lurking on this thread because I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm stationed at Ft Bragg NC and I emailed the Sheriff, but have not yet recieved a response. Being 19 and in the Army kinda bites. I can be trusted with a .50 cal machine gun and other assorted ordinance on the highways of a hostile country...but I can't be trusted with a handgun where I'm stationed, even though its legal to posess.

I guess my only real option is getting my dad to gift one to me while I'm on leave in Washington state (my state of "residence").

What I dont get is that open-carry is allowed at 18...but you can't be even GIVEN a handgun before you turn 21. I'm going to make it a freakin' goal to get a CCW permit in as many states as possible (ie Washington and North Carolina both) to avoid a lot of this bullshit.

Oh well. 2 years, hoo-ah!

Thanks for all the info.

Well i would say it is offical

[font="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica"]Q: I want to buy a handgun from a friend. Do I need to get any sort of permit to buy it?
A: Yes. All handgun transfers in North Carolina, whether through a dealer or via private sale, or presented as a gift, require that the intended recipient of the handgun obtain a Pistol Purchase Permit from his/her local Sheriff. You must go to your Sheriff, apply for a Pistol Purchase Permit (one per handgun you wish to purchase), and pay a $5 fee. When you take possession of the handgun you must present the Permit to the seller, who is required to retain it forever. If a Pistol Purchase Permit is not presented, both the buyer and the seller can be convicted of a Class I Misdemeanor.
As of 8/10/04 a new law was enacted, which permits someone with a valid North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit to purchase a pistol without the need to obtain a Pistol Purchase Permit.
Q: You said that I have to get a Pistol Purchase Permit to receive a handgun as a gift. My father wants to give me a handgun for my 21st birthday. Do I really have to get a permit for a birthday gift?
A: Yes. NC law makes no distinction between purchases or gifts, and makes no distinction between strangers or relatives when it comes to transfer of a handgun. You must go through the legal process in order to obtain a handgun in North Carolina. There are no exceptions, except for Concealed Handgun Permit holders.

[font="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica"] With the advent of the National Instant Check System (NICS) there is no public safety reason why the Pistol Purchase Permit system needs to continue. The Jim Crow era is over, and the laws of that era need to be eliminated. Most people agree with that in principle, but for some reason when it comes to guns a significant number of people seem to think that discrimination and arbitrary requirements are a good thing. This is something NCRPA totally disagrees with.

that pretty much says it

A lot of laws in a lot of places contradict themselves. It's pretty stupid but untill the majority of the population removes their head from their 3rd point of contact and opens their eyes it won't be changing anytime soon.

I could say any number of unsulting, vulgar, and suggestive things about you being in the USMC, but hey, we're all on the same team, right?

And yeah, its a lot easier to go to Airborne School if you're Army. And being 82nd you are an outcast if you arn't. Its a shame they let legs in to the 82nd without jump-wings in the first place (IMHO).

I don't have to be an NCO or even Specialist (May 1st my friend) to talk shit. Its called being "Airborne". You know? Jumping out of an airplane while in flight ;)

And yeah, I have respect for all the services. Cousin, Navy (don't you guys work for them or something?) His dad, 'Nam Vet. Parents ex-LA County Deputy Sheriffs. Aunt ex-Air National Guard (I know, I don't care either). And then theres me. Active duty Army, JUMP STATUS, lower enlisted.

Ha. I know, I know. We can argue about this until the cows come home, but we both know where that would go.

PS: In order to be a boot-MF'er you'd have to be 11B, in our book. Artillery, baby. We're called the King of Battle for a reason. ;)

A big fat ZERO.

My wife's been deployed 3 times now and she's been in just as long as I have.

But I have to tell ya that Jump Status really seals the deal for me LOL.

You have to take a ribbing from the folks that have been in longer..........That's just he way things are for the rookies.
