That knucklehead is lucky he isn't here and pulling that crap at my kid's school. I would ensure my kid continued in the competition. Try to stop him and the principal and the superintendant would end up having to buy their underwear used at goodwill.

Thats absolutely ridiculous. I have raised my son around firearms the same way I was, he knows that he may see it and touch it anytime he asks, and he will NOT touch one without myself or his grandpa there with him. Not allowing kids around guns just makes them more ignorant to the function and consequences of a gun, thus making them more likely to have an accident with one if/when they do touch one. (IMHO) What better arena to teach kids about the safe handling of a gun than a competition supervised by proper individuals.

My understanding is they applied the school's 'zero tolerance' for weapons policy to an off-campus, after school, supervised, state sponsored activity.

I like how they waited until the very last minute to pull the rug out from under these kids, too, to make sure they didn't have time to fight it. What a-holes. You gotta believe this was planned for weeks, and they got a big belly laugh at the kids spending time and money practicing and preparing for the match.

The team should see if they can form a private club team not affiliated with the school and compete in some matches that way, instead.

Exactly, following that logic I should have been expelled in 5th grade, and never let into another school. (when I started hunting and shooting with my dad)

Not quite. It seems to me the marksmanship team was affiliated with the school in some (semi-)official capacity, and I guess schools can have some say over extra-curricular activities in which the school's name is used (even if it's as dumb as this).

But what I don't get is if the school district has this policy that no student gets to do any extra-curricular activity with firearms in that student's capacity as a student of that school, why does the school-affiliated marksmanship team even exist in the first place?

Our schools are becoming bastions of socialist behavior. They are recruitment centers for liberalism and restriction.

I was on my school rifle team. The gun range is inside the school, adjacent to the gymnasium. I was also inmy JROTC unit and we fired M-16's and M-60's on a military range during fallcamp.No parent that I ever heard of made any negative comments about any of that much less a political figure or aschool board.

Of course, it was in Alaska...

I guarantee the rifle team has been a part of the school system longer than these idiots have been. It is an old sport, and has been part of many athletic curriculums since its inception. These schmucks (and I use this term with the utmost respect for non schmuck members of the educational system) are ready to destroy school heritage and the opportunity for many kids to get scholarships in their sport of choice.

Reminds me of an news piece I watched about some little kid who had an assignment to make a historical diorama. He chose the Normandy Invasion which was either pre-approved by the teacher or was directly assigned to him or was part of a list, I can't remember. Anyway, he used those little green plastic soldiers for it and was immediately detained and told to cut the little guns off of the soldiers. All part of their "Zero Intelligence/Tolerance" campaign. I'll see if I can find it.
