Sturm, Ruger & Company has announced a recall of Ruger SR9 pistols that can fire if dropped.

According to the firearms manufacturer, whose main manufacturing plant is in Newport, N.H., the pistols were manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008. The company said that they can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped with their manual safeties in the “off” or “fire” position and a round in the chamber. The pistols will not fire if the manual safety is in the “on” or “safe” position.

The company said it is reworking the design of a new trigger group that prevents firing when dropped and will retrofit at no charge all Ruger SR9 pistols with serial number prefix “330.”

"We will install the new trigger group in your SR9 and return it to you FREE of charge. When we do, we also will send you a FREE extra magazine as a "thank you" for your patience and cooperation."

Awesome. Maybe while they're at it they can make the trigger feel less like aplastic diskgun's triggerand more like a handguntrigger.

The recall notice was issued yesterday, citing concerns that the SR9 can, under certain conditions, fire if dropped with their manual safeties in the ‘off’ or ‘fire’ position and a round in the chamber. The pistols will not fire if the manual safety is in the ‘on’ or ‘safe’ position.”

We just got a notice at the gun shop that the Sturm/Ruger SR9 manufactured between October 2007 and April 2008 can fire when dropped with the safety off (they are supposedly OK with the safety engaged). This includes all such guns with the serial number prefix 330-xxxxx. They will replace the trigger group free of charge to fix the problem. Call 800-784-3701 for more information.
